When: meet @ 10:00am / ride @ 10:15am - Next 4 Saturday's (Rain Date on Sundays)
Level: Novice/Beginner
Terrain: Varied - Mostly smooth and flowing with a few challenges to
practice on
Pace: all will be waited for
Duration: 2 hours
411: What is a "PYT" ride??? It is a ride where we go out and practice
our technique or skills. It will usually start with a short talk about
what we know and what we want to learn and then go for bit of a warmup
ride and then we'll find a couple places to try skills such as
skinnies or log rolls/hops and practice them until we are more
comfortable. This ride is great for beginner mountain bikers or even
experienced riders who may be a little rusty. Come out and learn
something new or get better at something you are rusty on - and maybe
meet some fellow riders to ride with in the future.

we had a total of 17 riders this saturday. the experience within the group ranged from "i've never been offroad on a bike" to "i used to ride an mtb a decade ago, but need to brush up on my skillz" to "i ride all the time, but i just can't figure out how to __________".

we went over mtb 101 stuff: understanding brakes and shifting, learning about weight distribution and traction, and the physics behind keeping a low center of gravity. we practiced hillclimbs and descents, getting over logs and tackling uneven terrain. after the technical practice, we got a nice 5 mile ride in at a mellow pace and everyone was able turn theory into reality. it was a lot of fun and should be a great group again this coming saturday. several folks intend to warm up on the PYT ride for the Wicked Ride on sunday...

I am excited in going to tomorrow morning's "PYT". My last practice was two weeks ago in Maine. A place called Back Country Excursion will provide a one on one by request. I was able to work on my weakness(s) without me even knowing that I had any. Regardless, looking forward to see everyone there...

Hi Tim,
I'll come this Saturday to Lynn Woods. I could use the training / practice being a novice rider. Look forward to it - hope it is good weather!

I don't think I'll make the trek with the forecast as of tonight.

Will it be happening Sunday instead?

Bummer:

11/3 PYT Clinic @ Lynn Woods is CANCELED due to Weather.

There is no rain date for this one because of other obligations tomorrow (the organizers for this will either be at the NEMBA Regional Board meetings or at the cross races tomorrow).

See you next Saturday at Belmont...

I am glad to know that more PYT's have been added for November! Everyday has been raining so I hope this trend ends this coming weekend...

finally! ...a saturday without rain!

bundle up, it will be chilly...

the trails at belmont are very mellow and non-technical. a portion of the ride will be winding through a big grassy field and then heading into the wood for classic new england singletrack. but the flavor is very different from fells, lynn woods or hp.

the trails at great brook in carlisle have a more similar flavor to fells, lynn woods and hp, but have a broader mix of easier trails and only a few technical bits.

in both belmont and gb, all trails are open to bikes.

At 33 degrees in the parking lot, it was chilly, all right!

...but everyone did a great job and eventually thawed out.

The 24 MTB riders that braved the chill on Saturday morning were dedicated to getting the most out of the clinic they could. Everyone absorbed the demonstrations, asked lots of great questions, worked hard to get into the correct body positions, and cheered each other on as we learned how to handle riding a short steep ascent, a completely controlled steep descent, and getting over obstacles of various sizes. We even tackled a couple narrow bridges and some tight twisty singletrack that brought all the new skills into play!

Next Saturday, the format will be slightly more advanced, we will briefly review what we learned in past clinics, and supplement that with more advanced information such as trail etiquette and techniques on "how to manage the trail" rather than letting the trail manage you. This is still appropriate for first time or rusty riders, but we will try to get a longer ride in (about 5-6 miles.)
