up, that is.
After a couple decades on a mtb it takes freaking cross practice to do me in. I was thinking of buying a cross bike and figured I would go out and play with some dismounts. Didn't take long to screw it up going into some barriers. Badly separated shoulder. Waiting to get an appointment with the ortho. The guys at the hospital were trying to put a positive spin on it but I think I am looking at surgery.
Anybody else done this yet? I know tons who have busted collarbones and I was hoping, but it was not to be. Right now I am sitting with the arm resting pain-free on a pillow but thus ended my season! The wife was philosophical about it though. Her first comment was "you have two months to heal before ski season".

Ouch!!! Badly sprained my wrist in the deal as well. Luckily my shoulder needed only physical therapy (so far). It's been two months and my shoulder is much better, but tendons are still weak, and the joint still loose. I've been ridin, just need to be real conservative.
Good luck with your recovery!

I had a second degree separation a few years ago. Hurt bad, but after about 5 weeks, I started riding again. I wasn't sure it was a good idea, but another guy I rode with separated his shoulder too at around the same time. He started riding after 2 weeks (nut job). After about two miles into that first ride, my shoulder area felt so much better because it finally got loosened up after being immobilized for weeks. Never looked back after that. Worked for me...

Thanks for the good wishes. I sure hope I can get back on the bike. Not off road at first for sure but just to be using the shoulder.
This is going to be killing me. Along with riding I have taken up kayaking big time this year and this is the very last thing I needed for THAT sport.
There is always next year.

I resemble that remark...
My separated shoulder accident happened about 2 years ago too...got lucky, in that it was a second degree anterior separation but didn't need surgery. I was able to ride home one handed, and work it back in myself. Lots of pain for a good two weeks, and took approx couple months to fully recover, with occasional pain but rare to this day.
If you need surgery or anything, Dr Zarins (http://www.revolutionsoccer.net/team/index.cfm?ac=coachbio&bio=32268), who checked my shoulder, comes highly recommended, just looking at all the signed photos in his office frrom the Patriots, The N.E. Revolution and the Boston Bruins was enough...

Yup, 1st degree seperation for me, took out a couple ribs to boot. Immobilized it right away, kept it that way as much as I could for the next 5 weeks. Rode DH at Sunday River first weekend back, a lot of stiffness and a good bit of sore for the first few runs, then started feeling pretty good. Next morning it was sore as hell, but loosened up again and felt fine.
Good luck with yours, and I hope you're not one of those people that sleep with an arm curled under the pillow, that won't be happening for a long time.

Well, I rode home too! I picked myself up, noticed the huge difference betwen the two shoulders and got on the bike and took off! I knew I had about 5-10 minutes before it set in. I was right. Stoppede off long enough to take off the helmet as the wife put on the shoes and off to the ER.
The shoulder is still sitting low! Way low. That is what I hoped the ortho could do for me but no luck with the appointment today. We shall see. Feels a whole lot better taking it totally easy today.
Might need to look up this Dr. Zarin!

I am a side sleeper but now it is flat on the back. The wife was not too happy with the snoring, let me tell you! She knows where the sofa is.
