View Full Version : Ride close to Boston?

Here's the situation - I have an early afternoon meeting on the south shore near Boston, the guy I'm with wants to ride, he lives in Winchester. He's a relative newbie, but is an ok rider, I'm a super stud rider, as everyone knows LOL.

His local turf is The Fells, we did that last time - where can we ride that's relatively close to the south shore that won't blow this guy away?

TIA,
John

Great Brook in Carlisle is a fantastic place to take beginners IMO. Good mix of carriage roads and some really nice skinny ribbons of buffed singletrack thru the fields, along with plenty of intermediate stuff in the woods to step it up on. Should be some good maps around, which helps a lot also.

Thanks, I took this guy to Shenipsit Forest, which is pretty technical and he did pretty well, so I don't think I need to dumb it down too much. I don't think some place like Lynn would work out...

...and yes a good map is a requirement.

If your on the south shore for your meeting you may want to ride Wompatuck in Hingham, park map is really good.

Blue Hills (you'd need someone to lay out a good route to make it worth while (from my own experience).

Blue Hills works. Give me a call and I'll lay out a route for you.

Wompy is cool, but a little far south. Lynn has lots of less free-ridey stuff, so might want to consider that, too.

Great Brook also has a good selection of more challenging stuff as well, just fyi.

Another vote for Wompy, well laid out map, most intersections actually numbered. Depending on how early you get out I could play guide if you want and my work schedule would allow.

We're looking at 2:30 right now.

Well I've missed you guys by this point, work didn't exactly pan out, that's pushing the early part of early for me.

Enjoy the ride!

If you don't know Blue Hills, don't go there. Finding the singletrack takes a while. Where on the South Shore? Wompy is good, but I think Borderland or Foxboro are a little more fun.

We rode today, we did Hopkinton Reservoir - it was close to where the appointment was today (different one than last week). It worked out perfectly, there were some really nice rock gardens, some gentle hills and just enough mileage to satisfy the guy I rode with.

It was a really nice ride.
