I decided that there needs to be a NEMBAfest thread here in the General Discussion forum, I also didn't really like the name of the other thread in the NEMBA events forum. Anyhoo in case you havent been paying attention the big event is this weekend

http://www.mtbadventureseries.org/mtbadventure/NEMBAFest2007.htm

I will be there bright and early selling all my junk... errrr I meant to say "quality pre-owned cycling parts and accessories". I will be riding later in the day after all my merchandise is gone. I spent the better part of this evening organizing all my parts and I have LOTS of stuff for sale, I will post a picture of the pile tomorrow. Some of the better stuff up for grabs:

XTR derailers, fron t & rear
2 (yes 2) Marzocchi z1 forks, one QR & one QR20
brand new On-One inbred 29er frame
IF Deluxe steel frame
29er SS wheel (36 spoke, Delgado, Surly disc hub)
8 speed XT shifter pods
8 speed chain & cassette

lots more stuff

Who else will be there Saturday?

Anyone know the approximate mileage for the bailouts on the Advanced-Intermediate ride? Don't want to take on more than I can handle.

I'll be there. Nothing to sell, but i'll bring a couple bucks in case I see something I want to buy. I'll be around the Patrol tent for at least part of it, and will be riding the sweep toward the end to make sure noone is left lost in the woods. It should be a blast, I'm really looking forward to it!

Robyn and I will be there for either the Intermediate ride at 9:30 or Advanced Intermediate ride at 10am. It would depend partly on who is going on which ride. I am also curious what the short rocky climb is like.

I am the originator of the "other" post. I started it because I was surprised there was no mention of nembafest on the "Nemba Events" forum and I apparently couldn't read well enough to see where it was prominently displayed on the home page. I agree the tone was a little snippy, but I will not apologize for it, as it got the conversation started and got me an opportunity to volunteer.

Thanks A.A. for bringing it to "General" attention.

I will be working in the parking area from 8-10 and leading what PK called an EZ Intermediate ride at 10:30. Apparently it's not on the official schedule, just one of those every-half-hour rides I guess. Please don't run me over either on the asphalt or the dirt. I will be moving slowly.

Looking forward to meeting some of you.

Here's a nice map of the marked loops curtesy of the Friends of Wompatuck.

http://friendsofwompatuck.org/wompy_map.pdf

Does anyone know approximately how long the advanced (orange colored) section is? I would like to ride just that section. IMO, it has the most fun trails. A little bit of everything. People shouldn't be scared off from seeing it dubbed "expert". The only reason it is is due to the length tacked onto the end of the intermediate loop. Back issues tend to limit me to about 10 miles these days. I would love to lead an intermediate ride over on that side, but I'm not sure how long I would hold out. Knowing the distance might help.

Mr_Cheeze
September 7th, 2007, 12:42 PM
Yea, I glossed right over that 22 mi. total part. Doh!

I thought about catching up with the expert group, too, but I need to rest once in a while. Those guys go too fast and don't stop. Rode with a similar gorup last year and was zonked after an hour... and they considered themselves intermediate! (It was a large group... too large, like 20 people. I think they realized their mistake after the ride leaders realized they lost 3/4 of the group by reaching Prospect Hill. And they lost me after that.)

Which begs a question. How often can one reasonably expect an "intermediate" ride to stop for rest?

Aging Wannabee

I'm a little confused. Where is the Intermediate route. I see "Everyone" "Beginner" and "Sport, Expert..."

Is the Beginner and Intermediate loop the same thing? is the Intermediate and Advanced loop the same thing? Is this the race course we're looking at?

Mr_Cheeze
September 7th, 2007, 12:52 PM
I believe the green loop is intermediate (10 miles). It's not clear where the beginner loop goes entirely. The expert begins at s18 of the intermediate.

I just went to http://friendsofwompatuck.org (http://friendsofwompatuck.org/wompy_map.pdf)
and it looks like your map is of the "Landmine Classic" race course, not the nembafest routes, unless they are the same thing.

What I see on that map is a beginner loop when you add the blue part and a much bigger "everyone else" loop, eliminating the blue part. Additionally, the categories "Sport, Expert..." are race categories.

skunkty14
September 7th, 2007, 01:26 PM
Where are the festivities/parking on the map? It doesn't appear to be at the start/finish of the loops.

The festivities are at the start/finish area; there's a large field there for tents, booths, parking, etc.

Edit: See wannabee's post below for parking info, I was simply speculating earlier.

and it looks like your map is of the "Landmine Classic" race course, not the nembafest routes, unless they are the same thing.

The nembafest routes will be the same as the race loops, with some of the nasty sections re-routed around for the lower intensity rides and guides to show you around the shorter rides like the MTB playground ride (my guess is this will be an out and back to said playground).

What I see on that map is a beginner loop when you add the blue part and a much bigger "everyone else" loop, eliminating the blue part. Additionally, the categories "Sport, Expert..." are race categories.

I think the break down of the rides on Sat. novice, intermediate, etc. has to do with pace to a degree. The advanced intermediate ride will end up riding the same loop as the advanced ride later, but at a mellower pace I believe. As for the shorter loops, my guess is that they will be guided by a leader familar with the park linking trails in the slightly different arrangement than the courses shown on the map.

I guess we'll see how this all plays out tomorrow. I'm not an official guide or any thing, but if anyone wants info on the routes tomorrow, I know the park well. So if you see a fat guy on a green turner feel free to stop and ask questions.

I believe there are only three (3) race courses.
There is the beginer loop which is about 10 miles, depending on the final route in the pine grove. All others are 22 miles. The marathon is 44 miles, 2 times around the 22 mile loop.
Part of the beginner loop is common with the 'all others'. Each group will separate at S13, in the south portion of the campground, beginners go 1 way, all others go the other way.

Just came back from the Wompatuck/Nembafest south field.
Parking is in the south field. Approximately 2/3 of the field is parking, the other is the Nembafest area. The field is mowed very short and it is tinder dry. There is NO WATER service in this area, and fire dnger is high. There was talk of not allowing campfires of any size, anywhere.
Overflow parking if needed will be on the entrance road, BUT, NO PARKING on the roadway blacktop. The road side has been mowed. The road is narrow and must be completely open for emergency vehicles.
NO PARKING on the South Loop (aka crit loop). It is too narrow to support cars parking on the road side, plus the road side doesn't exist in several areas. The South loop is ONE WAY, counterclockwise, too. Follow the signs.
If additionaol parking is needed, it will be at the DCR Transfer Building, out on Union St.

wannabee
September 7th, 2007, 02:13 PM
And one more thing: bumped into PK out at the field. He's got everything under control. Tape measure, spray paint and hammer in hand.
If you plan to sell some stuff in the bike swap area, it is at the farthest portion of the field, away from the start/finish line, close to where the racers come out of the woods, but close to the middle of the field.
One drawback of these sites, you will not be allowed to sell out of your vehicle. You will unload all your 'stuff' at your space, then the vehicle must be placed in the parking area, on the other side of the event field. I presume this means unload and move the car by 8:30am, as 8:30 is setup.
This is a different plan than in 2006, where your vehicle was back to your site.
I do not kow how this will affect the packing/loading up and going home process.
The outside of the field is ALL bicycle vendors that Phil got to come.

Have a safe and fun event.

no problem, skunkty14. no parking tickets, that i know of!
last year hingham fd visited the site, and suggested (then) that no one park on the incoming roads (blacktop). if at worst, park off pavement on one side only. we found some safe hard ground off pavemet and had it mowed. when possible near the field, park diagonally but park as directed by the parking people.
the fd responds with their ladder truck to all incidents at the park. visualize a tractor trailer sized vehicle navigation the park's narrow, overgrown roadways. now park cars on those roadways.

Thanks for answering. I am leading the "EZ Intermediate" ride at 10:30 and hoped to follow a true Intermediate course, not do the Beginner course really fast, or the Advanced course really slow. I feel the same as the other guy (woodsguy?) who said he'd rather do a shorter ride on the funner trails. I don't know Wompy like the back of my hand, but not going to get lost either. I just hoped to avoid anybody trusting enough to let me lead them having to wait while I check the map every 2 intersections.

Maybe I can find the beginning of the non-beginner section and pick up from there.

Skunkty14 -- If you would look me up doing parking detail between 8 & 10 and confer with me about the routes he's laid out (I won't have time to check b4 volunteer job) and what's a good route for a fun, challenging 10-12 mile, plenty-of-stops ride I would greatly appreciate it. I'll be in a yellow Independant Fabrications T-shirt and a shabby Sox hat. I'll also be on a silver Turner with a maroon/black shirt w/ gold racing stripes at wherever people meet up for led rides as 10:30 aproaches. I'm no skinny kid either.

Thaks again for the answer.

South Field is about 2 to 2.5 miles inside the park, after the campground, and after mt. blue spring. STOP at the spring and get your cool fresh spring water!
There should be some cones out on the main road where the race crosses over then back agian, just after the spring.
Next right, follow signs to South Field.

Also, I believe all 'volunteers' will be wearing the same 'VOLUNTEER' jersey for 'event' identification purposes.

kevin-

that's a good estimate, but there is a 2 mile stretch that is skipped when a rider transfers over to the advanced loop. the route is similar to last year and someone in my group clocked it at 14 mi...

-t

Well, I'm guessing since the expert loop is 22 miles and it includes the intermediate loop which is 10 miles, that the remaining loop would be about 12 miles (someone might want to check my math).:)

Sounds good to me Rob, I'll keep my eyes open for ya and we can confer about a route. Right away I'd say the orange loop on the map is pretty nice, but we'll talk tomorrow and I'll think it over tonight. I was thinking of doing the whole 22mi ride, but I'm leaning towards the shorter ride it sounds like you're leading so I have some legs left for tomorrow if you're interested in hitting some of the good stuff.

I know someone already gave some ideas for this, but to provide some more landmarks:

Enter the park on Union St. and you'll pass through a gatehouse area (you won't be stopped, empty building), up a slight incline and see the Visitor Center on the right and a small parking lot on the left. Keep going straight, up a largish hill. You'll pass the campground on your right after the hill, keep going straight and pass Mount Blue Spring (assuming you don't need water) again on the right about 1/4mi past the camp ground. Shortly after the spring you'll see cones and signage telling you to turn right.

I drove into the park last night (I'm local) and the whole thing appears to be pretty well marked, including a sign out on 228 for the turn to the park, so quodos to hard work of all involved.

I'm thinking "Advanced Loop Only" like others have suggested: Warmup on pavement from Start to s19 and pick up the Orange/Advanced there for a little more than 10 miles of "just fast enough to clean it, with LOTS of stops to suck wind" EZ Intermediate.

Whew! Boy, was it ever hot at the Wompatuck Nembafest. Must have been close to 100 in that field. If it wasn't for that breeze that Phil scheduled, we'd all be toast.
The kids race made the short track race look like kids play.
Demo bikes of all shape and sizes (and prices) made the rounds.
Blame The Dog hid under the tent instead of on the stage.
Free water was made available from several vendors to the delite of riders
I found the part that I was looking for, too.
All together, a good fun day for all.

Looked like a great turnout, just going by how full the parking area was. A lack of any breeze on the trails definitely made for a tough ride. Nice thing about Wompy is there are many areas in which to bail, and I'm just guessing that there was a good amount of that happening. Blue Mt. Spring likely got lots of visitors. (Although, I'll never understand the thought process whereby anyone thinks they can get by with a single bottle of water. )

The trails at this place are SOO much better than anywhere else I have been. What is that loop considered because we found it failry easy but a lot of fun.

Thanks to aging wannabe, Peter D. Bikes, and Husqvana (sic?) for a well paced trek.

Thanks for leading the way, i found the map and trailhead signs most usefull, with each section identified with its Norths, south, central prefix. The terrain at Wompy seems to be a lot like Bear Brook with out all the climbing. Were hoping to get back down there and ride again when the temps are more favorable. Unfortunatly Annabelles' asthma started giving her a little trouble out around N19. So we needed to take a longer break and then find a short cut for Peter and daughter to get back to south feild.

I continued on the marked loop alone and really enjoyed the ride. Thought i might catch up with the group again, but had to stop and rememdy a broken spoke out on the ledges near the reservior, somewhere between R5 and E17.

I wanted to meet people from the NEMBA forums since I'm new. Perhaps you guys know each other in person, but I asked around the NEMBA tent, hoping to meet some people from here on the forum.

I think I was one of the few riders with out a camel back, or riders clothes with teams/logos on it. Just a guy with a black Scott, in a gray shirt and dog tags.

Yes. There actually was a family loop. I ended up leading the second family loop ride. It ran a little under three miles and wasn't as "technical" as the other runs. I keep forgetting how fun it is to lead a children and families ride until it's my turn to actually do it. I really enjoyed it this time.

Lost, but found...
A 'functioning' cycling computer was turned into the Wompatuck DCR during the Nembafest/Landmine event. Did you loose one, this weekend? Let me know the description and I will forward it to the Wompatuck DCR contact person.
