I have a 1 1/4" receiver hitch on 1 car and another car that can handle either a 1 1/4 or 2" hitch. Problem is, I would like to buy 1 bike rack.

Should I get a 2" hitch and buy a rack for a 2" and get an adapter to use it with the 1 1/4 hitch?

Will it work well with the adapter?

Will a 1 1/4 bike rack work well with three bikes that might weigh as much as 30lbs. each?

Any suggestions?

Buy the rack for the 2" receiver and the adapter so you get the higher load capacity.
2 bikes is usually the limit for a 1 1/4" rack. 3 at 30 pounds will probably be just over.

get the setup for the 2" and then buy the adapter for the 1 1/4.

Yakima's BigHorn 4, Kingpin 2, KingPin 4 and Slickrock come as a 2" and the 1 1/4 adapter is $15.
You only need to remove one bolt to swap tongue sizes and you get a complete steel tongue. (our competition uses a 1.25 tongue and shims it out to 2")

Make sure to check the tongue load rating on your car but we rate our 4 bike carriers @ 120 lbs (30/bike).

The Kingpin 4 is the most popular. Fold down arms and mast, anti swing cradles and optional locks. $199

If you haven't pick one up yet and have more questions pm me

I've got a 1 1/4" to 2" adapter somewhere that I bought but never used. It's a beefy piece of steel that must weigh 10 pounds. I think I got it on eBay.
