Well, I think maybe part of the reason no one seems to like LW for XC/Trail riding is because of it's confusing nature (and small size). So this year I'm going to try to establish a weekly ride on Fridays leaving at ~ 5:45. Consider it a well paced intermediate ride. Basically that means we'll keep it moving at a decent clip and try to cover the loop I ride in ~ 1 hour with extra time to do some add on trails/backtracking to show people how to extend the ride. Total should be around 1.5 hours +. This would start next Friday - 6/22.
This will not be a race, or a training ride but we will keep moving - no BS stops. The place is small enough to save that for after the ride. LW offers some longer, fairly hard, climbs and at least one would be included on each ride - mainly because they can't be avoided. From an XC perspective the trails are considered "technical" with plenty of really technical lines around if you feel so inclined. This ride will show you where almost everything is in the park, even if we don't ride all of it you can learn where the real tech. stuff is.
The whole idea is to get more people into riding out there besides just the diehard old timer XC guys and the FR guys. The park has amazing potential (ridge on the North side) and hopefully we'll be building some new trail. Actually, we want to build a lot of new trail if we get the approval. I'm thinking that if we build it and there's no one to enjoy it then what's the point? Might as well introduce the park to new people and those that maybe rode there a few times and got discouraged/bored and left.
Regardless of any new trails as it stands now the place is just a great place for riding. It is a great place to build tech skills, train for racing, challenge yourself with and just enjoy mountain biking.
Things to bring: Your bike, a helmet, the standard self sufficient tools and a good attitude. I drive a silver Subaru Wagon and park off of the Twin River road exit. I can usually get to LW by 5:30. Also, this is not an "official" RI NEMBA ride or anything like that. Just a show and go. Again, This would start next Friday - 6/22.
