I asked this in the other hub thread, but I suspect its stale and no one is looking any more... Apologies for those that had to look at both of these posts...

You can get the whole story over in the other thread, but basic question - how many ball bearings should be in a Shimano hub?

Both an online tutorial and the LBS tech told me 9 on each side. My local mechanical engineer friend (who is also a MTBer) said 8 in each side and when I took the old one apart there was 8 in each side.

8 rings a bell for me. I TOLD you to count them.

BTW, the "fill the races then remove one" approach works great. I like Phil Wood Tenacious Grease.

I don't know the number, but from back when, the rule was one less than what would fit in the race. If you can fit 9 in there, the right number is probably 8.

My favorite website for repair advice, Park Tool, says the most common application (i.e., shimano) is 9 quarter inch balls for rear hubs, 10 3/16th balls for front hubs. I've never bought into the "leave one out" school

At the time when I was doing the job, I did count them. However, I had conflicting information. The web says 9, the tech says 9 (and gave me 20 - 2 extra in case I lost some), yeah there's eight in there, but that's one data point against two others.

There you go - I guess this is a valid dilemma then.

Stuff in as many as will fit, with each touching the race. If you try to put in too many, it will be obvious, because the last one won't fit.
