Anyone on here running 1x9 setups for an XC oriented HT? I'm thinking of building up a HT with this setup, looking for advice/experiences with this kind of gearing. Would be using SRAM x9 rear der. and shifters, would a single speed crank and chainring like a Truavtiv Stylo SS crank work well with this?

The single speed crank may work well, especially if it uses a non-ramped chainring (designed to keep the chain on rather than be efficient while shifting).
With ony the ft chainring you could use a 34t in the rear w/ a long cage derailer.
You will also need some way to keep the chain from hopping off the ft chainring. The Deda "dog fang" and the N-gear "jump stop" are popular choices.

The cheapo (~ $12) Third Eye Chainwatcher works real well and is easy to install. I'm running a Shimano hollowtech II crankset with a 32t Surly ring (rampless) with an 11 - 32 cassette (8 speed) and it's been working great. Just make sure there's enough chain tension, without having too much, and you should be all set.

Im running a 1x9 I got a surly 34t nonramp chainring on some raceface prodigy (sp) cranks, dangerboy bash, a ngear jumpstop, 11-34 cassette, with a x9 shortcage. No problems except my weak legs

i'd reccomend going with a medium cage drlr over a long. a short cage mtb drlr may work with it too. I'm running a 36 X 11-32 on my DJ bike right now and am looking into getting a smaller cassette. For general trail use, a 34 should be good up front or bigger if you've got enough power to drive it up hills. I run a 38 X 11-32 on my bighit (24" rear) and can usually climb most stuff that you could reasonably expect to climb with a DH bike (I ride around bluehills with it and usually only dismount when going up great blue and past the barrracks up top on the bike loop). on my trail hardtail i run a 36/22 X 11-32 and rearly shift into the granny unless i'm really burnt out or it's a long, steep technical climbs.

Sounds like I should consider a med. cage der. for this setup. Will a long cage work in a pinch? Considering I already have one I'd like to save some $$ somewhere, but maybe a med. cage is inevidable.
How have you guys dealt with chainline? Have you had to run a longer BB spindle or is a regular length BB you'd use with a 3 chainring setup seem to work, minus some cross chaining at the extremes?
This is some very helpful info, thanks to everyone for posting.

A long cage will work just fine....you'll just have less chain tension which will result in slightly slower shifting. Nothing to be concerned about if your looking to save a few bucks.

I just set up a 1x8 bike. I am currently using a shimano 32T up front (but it sounds like eventually I should switch to a SS ring) and a 12-32T in the back. To prevent derailling up front I CNCed myself an inner ring guard/guide that mounts to the granny gear holes and spins along next to the middle chainring. The BB side of the guide is counterbored for the chainring bolt heads and beveled along the edge so it clears the chainstays. It seems to get the job done so far, but I have not put it through its paces yet. I guess I see if I need to cahnge anything in the design.

Matt - throw up some photos of your set up please.
Thanks.

Suppose I'll keep the questions coming; for mounting my single ring up front with a guard like the Salsa Ring Dinger (not a bash guard, just a guard for single setups) can I use single speed length crank bolts or do I need to find something longer and make it work?

Probably something like this....

I got this desing off MTBR and used th esuggested Lexan...the lexan was too plyable at the suggested thickness and didn't keep the chain from dropping. The machined aluminum idea is far better. There is also a company making something similar if you don't have the tools to build one.
I'd taken my 1x9 setup from a surly instigator with a Third Eye type deal and it wouldn't work on the trek...ended up with an e.13 SRS....a fabulous piece of work.

I built up a 1x8 yesterday and just got back from it's maiden voyage. I was limited to what I had on hand when I was building it up, so I ended up with a 34t SS ring up front and a 12-28 and a short cage XTR in the back. I've got a truvativ boxguide with some MRP rollers taking care of chain retention duties for the moment.
First thing I'm gonna change is the cogset for sure...32 woulda been a lot friendlier. uggghhh... :o

Here are the pictures of my inner chain guard. I am pretty happy about how it turned out.

I have also seen that Straightline is making inner rings:

Saw them on Lenoskys' STP:

Whole bunch of pics here: (probably a lot of other threads on mtbr too)

Thanks JoshG, that straitline inner ring looks awesome, I may order that right now!
I don't know how I missed that thread on MTBR, I searched over there before posting anything. Must be going blind or forgotten how to use the interweb.
