View Full Version : Stylo GXP crankset - anyone else ride one?

I picked up the outboard bearing Stylos in December to use on my 1x1. Since then they've probably seen 20 rides in varying conditions (snow, cold, mud etc..). The BB is fine (still really smooth, actually) but I can't keep the damn crank bolt tight. I've never ridden with them loose for very long so there's no wear on the splines, everything is still even with no notches or uneven spots. I notice it right away, stop and torque it all the way. After about an hour or so worth of riding it'll loosen. I've removed almost all the grease and applied blue loctite to both the main bolt and the self extractor. Anyone else have this issue? The MTBR reviews seem to indicate it's a widespread issue, but I never put much stock in those reviews..I bought these from the LBS and if I can't get 'em to stay put I may return them and try to trade up to the XT cranks (better idea with the pinch bolts, IMHO).

I have the Stylo cranks on my SS and haven't had an issue. Although I think I might know the issue, I had something similar occur on my XTR cranks (the version that was made from around 99-03). These designs use a two bolt method but the inner and out bolts can oppose one another. If you tighten the inner bolt down appropriately and crank the outter bolt flush, the outter bolt pulls on the inner bolt, hence loosing up the inner bolt. This is what happened on my XTR set, I found if I tightend the bolt connecting to the BB spline and then tighten the cap (crank arm remover/dust cap), that the crank arm would come loose. If I tightened the crankarm on but left the cap tight enough to hold the problem went away. So you may be over tightening the out bolt.

I have had no issues with mine BDEE, spin smooth and stay tight.

The next time it loosens up I'll try removing the extractor bolt, torquing the main bolt, and then installing the extractor to only hand tight. Maybe that'll work, thx for the idea.

I added a copius amount of blue loctite to the main fixing bolt. I also greased the top surface of the fixing bolt as well as the inside surface of the self extractor. After I let the loctite set (1 day) I backed the self extractor bolt out and then re-installed it hand tight (using a 15mm axle nut - the Truvativ self extractor takes a 16mm allen key, I think). After two hours of hard riding on Friday it was fine. Hopefully it won't be an issue going forward. Now I just need to have the freehub (DT Swiss star rachet) rebuilt because it's beginning to catch/give weird feedback when I stop pedaling.... Apparently I just generate too much torque, it must've been the weinerschnitzel and bier diet I followed after purchasing Jan Ullrich's training book ;)
