OK, I know, this isn't bike related. Well, it is. If I find a job I can afford to ride my bike. We all come from pretty varied backgrounds and I am hoping that at least a few of you out there are engineering sorts who might lend a hand.
Here's the pitch. I am looking for any leads, names, companies, etc. that might help me in my hunt. Please bear with me as you may know someone who knows someone...
I have been working as a Semiconductor Processing Engineer for MIT's Lincoln Laboratory for a long time. Got laid off at the end of the year. I am searching for a new place. I have a Bachelor's in Earth Science from Dartmouth. I have done just about everything there is to do in a cleanroom and tons of process development. I have done MEMS work, developed and fabricated GaAs lasers and laser arrays and thrive in an R&D environment, working with small development teams.
I know this is not a typical post here but I sure could use the help. Please contact me directly if you have ANYTHING to offer.
Thanks!
Chris

Thanks for that lead but I am in the Boston area and that would be quite the haul! I am not able to relocate right now.

How about IBM chip plant up here in Essex Junction, VT. Riding a'plenty in the area, as well as backcountry skiing/riding in winter (and april for that matter). I don't know exactly if it is a fit, but the area is nice and I see that they are looking for people these day.

Thanks for all the ideas guys! I will check into them.
All except Essex Junction. I would LOVE to head way up there (I have friends in Jericho) but family constraints... There IS a spot open at IBM listed as "Boston" that I am shooting at but who knows what they mean by that.

Hi Chris:
Sorry to hear about your predicament. Try Intel in Hudson. A bit of a haul for you but a good company to work for.
Good luck and I hope you are otherwise well,

Try Fairchild Semiconductor in Portland, ME. They have design offices in Lee and Bedford NH. The main office is in Portland by the airport, my wife tells me they have complete fab facilities there.

Found anything yet?
I've heard Varian in Gloucester is hiring. Theres also Axcelis in Beverly. Theres even some decent riding around here if you know where to go.

Funny you should mention those two places! First question: no, I haven't landed a job yet. Second, I have been in contact with a head hunter who works hard to place people at both of those places. My resume has been submitted!
I was looking at where they were, and between thinking of what a sucky commute Gloucester would be I was looking at how close both towns were to awesome riding! I could definitely see bringing the bike for some after work riding! I rarely have an excuse to trek up to Dog Town any more.
Thanks for the suggestion!

No Problem.
I actually bike with a couple of guys from Varian. They seem to like it up there and from what I hear they are busier than Axcelis. I worked at Eaton (now Axcelis) about 10 years ago doing machine assembly. They were ok but gain that was about 10 years ago.
Good Luck.

If you go so far as an interview with Varian, make sure you get the chance to randomly talk to people. I have heard it isn't the greatest place to work.

Thanks guys for the input! Always welcome. There seem to be quite a few places out there where people feel overworked and harried. Sounds like a world wide problem.

My suggestions, esp. if you have Lincoln Labs credentials:
Raytheon Advanced Device Center in Andover (facility behind the Patriot assembly lines)..? They have (used to have?) a big foundry and design center there. Raytheon also does a lot of IC work in Lexington and in Sudbury.
Analog Devices, also in Andover.
BU Photonics center, Boston. BU also has a MEMs program.
Draper Labs, Cambridge.
Evergreen Solar in Marlboro, MA.

Thanks! I have apps in at most of those places, and/or am keeping close watch on available slots! I have to keep checking on BU as they didn't have anything but looked realy interesting! I would very much like to get into more MEMS work!
