Sunday, June 3: Ride with Bikes Not Bombs (BNB) to support youth bicycle programs in Boston and shipments of donated bikes to Africa, Central America, and the Caribbean!† Choose from 15, 25, or 62-mile rides.† We provide mechanics check-ups, rest stops with food and drink, maps of the beautiful routes, lead riders, following vehicles, and a gourmet meal and celebration afterwards. There is no charge for riders, but you must raise pledges for BNB ($100.00). Ride at your own pace; the 15 mile ride is especially great for families with children!
As this is the first year BNB is in its new home and shop spaces, we will premiere a new starting point at Stoney Brook across Amory St. from our new center in Jamaica Plain. We are pleased to announce that Mississippi’s Restaurant will again be the site for the after-ride fiesta, dinner and awards ceremony. We expect about 300 riders, and our goal is to raise $45,000. Check our website or call 617-522-0222 for a pledge sheet to get started.
For 23 years, Bikes Not Bombs has provided local youth bicycle education programs and international economic development projects; we currently remove over 5,000 donated bicycles from Massachusetts’ waste stream annually and put them to good use. All in all, over 26,600 bikes have been sent to nine countries since 1984. The latest: we’ve sent one of our youth program coordinators, Matt Soycher to the Caribbean island of Nevis (a state in the Federation of St. Kitts) to help start an Earn-A-Bike youth program and meet the parts, tools, helmets, stands, and 536 donated bicycles we shipped this January. Meanwhile, the first Earn-A-Bike, Girls In Action, and Youth Drop-In sessions at our new center start this spring in Jamaica Plain. The BNB Bike Shop is now re-open for business: repairs, refurbished bikes, new and used parts, the vocational educational program, and adult mechanics classes. Visit the new shop at18 Bartlett Sq in Jamaica Plain, at Green and Amory Streets. 617-522-0226
We are excited to embrace another year of concretely promoting bicycle usage, peace and sustainable development. I hope to see you at this fun and healthy event!
