We race BMX also. She got a sweet paint job for X-mas, and I finally got it back together... The light in the kitchen doesn't do it justice. I will post again, after the next sunny day.

That looks pretty sick, Steve. It's going to stink to get dirt on it!

Our "home track" is in Westfield Mass and is called Whip City BMX. We do race all around, though. In Meriden CT, Torrington CT, Billerica MA, on the Cape (Otis AFB) and previously in RI, but that track closed at the end of last season. Suppose to be a new track opening in North East CT, but that probably won't be until spring of 08. It's a fun sport and the two kids and I race. I think the kids appreciate their Dad involved and racing the same events they are in. And it's good fun bang'n bars with the old guys!!! ;)

Anybody can try it out for just the entry fee, at the "Race for Life" events that are held at each ABA track in the spring. Normally you need a membership/license, but at these events all money goes to the Leukemia foundation and you do not need a membership for that event. Happens once at each track per year and usually very early in the season.

Hare, thanks for the tip on the "Race for life" ; ' think I'll try that out down at capecodbmx this year. There's also supposed to be a track in Middleboro MA which is closer to us (oldcolonybmx) they supposedly just got asphault turns a few years ago, have you ever ridden there?

We have not ridden that track, as it doesn't operate much. Yes, they did improve it a couple years back, but then they only ran 3 or 4 events that year, then one national event in 2005 (no other events at all), and then nothing last year. I haven't heard anything about it for this year. I assume it's all done, but will let you know if I hear anything. The 411 site for this area is: http://www.nebmxnews.com/

Hi, l live super close to a bmx track. how old is a good age to get em out there on the bmx track? the cape cod bmx site says no min. age, and some are only 3 years old. what's a reasonable age?

From what I have seen, all depends on the child. Of course, they need to be free from training wheels... Some kids at 3 are having a ball, others at 6 or 7 are still intimidated and want to wait. My son started on two wheels at five and I brought him by the track to watch. He thought it looked like fun, but didn't want to join in. We watched another night the following year and he decided he wanted started the following year. So, he was 7 and that was a good age for him. We have been having fun with it ever since. My daughter, who is younger by 2 years, started at age 6. The norm seems to be 5 and above, but some start younger. 3 or 4 are questionable ages. Some are worthy and others are just a hazard to themselves on the track. The obstacles on the track are quite large and can be pretty challenging for the little ones (and myself). There are tracks around that are on public land and open for the public to use anytime, except on race days. I believe the Billerica track falls into that category, as well, I know the Meriden, CT track is open to the public. Which are the closest two to you. Good spots to give it a try, with out having to compete or shell out. For others reading this: The Torrington, CT track and only one of the two (Bethel or Trumbull, CT) are also on public land. Let me know if you need more info.
