don't let this happen to you:

the boys and i were hiking in the fells on saturday and when we got back to the car the window was smashed. evidently the car alarm scared off the thieves, because they didn't get the ipod and the cellphone that were sitting in plain view. unfortunately, they did take the boys school backpacks with their homework and smelly gym clothes. what a hassle...i feel violated.

:(

the state trooper who came and took the report said that this was the first smash and grab of the season on south border road. apparently there were 20-25 incidents on south border road and in the flynn rink lot last year.

trooper says:

do not leave any valuables in the car. don't leave any bags or purses in plain sight - put them in the trunk.

Thats horrible! i was riding in HP one after noon and saw a truck with the window smashed out. and over a few weeks in the same spot by the old fish hatchery was a car or truck with the window smashed.

That stinks, Tim. There is almost one such breakin a day where I live in Lexington, so no place is safe. Always for electronics: laptops, pdas, music players, GPS units.

I can just see your kids showing up at school the next day without their homework done saying "It got stolen!", only to have teachers respond "Yeah, Right."

That sucks. Sorry that happened to you! Some people just suck! I never leave anything in plain view when I am away from the car. I have friends who are in a very bad habit of leaving cash in plain view on my center console, and I always bitch at them about it cause I would to have my window smashed over a few bucks..

Bummer. I know what you mean about feeling violated. I had someone break into my house when I lived in Maine. They didn't take anything (although they had my crappy stereo stacked near the door), but I still felt like my privacy had been taken away.

I'm surprised you left an ipod & phone in view. It seems that's the #1 rule no matter where you're parked, don't leave anything in view.

I had my window smashed once in CT. While my wallet was not in clear view it was right where a thief would expect it to be - right under the floor mat. The replacement window was relatively cheap, but the pain of replacing my credit cards and license was mighty.

They had my credit cards for 2-3 hours before I could cancel them. In that time they billed over $4K on them. Luckily the credit card companies took the hit on that one.

i got complacent and forgot to remind the kids to put their stuff away. they got lucky...

on the plus side - the new window is in and didn't cost a cent.

thanks for commiserating...

Although I haven't had that problem (yet) I try to make a habit of only bringing a bare minimum when I go for a ride or skiing. License, registration, medical card and one credit card. And they stay on my body. That way even if I mess up it isn't like trying to replace your whole life.

Glad the old boat is still insured Tim!

That sucks allright. But, sadly, it doesn't surprise me. Being in or close to the city has its issues. It was probably someone who "ventured" from downtown and tried to make a "score" in the area where you were at the time. Being a Boston person I think about these things. Be on your guard when your in or near the city.

Having grown up in Medford (Meffa!), I can safely say that we had plenty of our own losers and there was no need to import any from "downtown".

Who you callin' a punk, you punk! Typical Meffa hooliganism. Probably married to some Brit soccer riot instigator.

:-)

P.S. I didn't say you were one of them. And my parents still live there too. A great town and place to live, but like any has its population of losers.

update:

one of the backpacks was found in saugus at a gas station. so meffa is off the hook on this one...

very nice of the attendant to call and let us know they found it. then another worker there saw the bag and threw it in the dumpster before i had a chance to retrieve it. said it looked suspicious...

ya think?!?
