I see a whole bunch of new folks registering for the forums for that photo contest - why don't you come on in and introduce yourself -

Where do you ride?
Have any more pics?
Take any good biking trips?
....and most importantly - what bike do you ride?

John
(I'd answer all those questions myself, but I think you could find out easily enough by doing a search).

Well, I joined up to the boards and as a NEMBA member after lurking on the boards a bit. Im a member on mtbr.com. ANyways I ride mostly in SEMASS. But when IM able I plan on going all over NE. So far the only good trip I had was too Otis down the Cape. I have some pics, but they are mostly scenery pics, like the current trail conditions and such. I ride a 2005 Fetish Obsession. The pic i posted for the contest, is an old one. I havent got any of its current look. I think Slappy posted one of me at Otis.

Been here for a while, but I'll take a turn. Ride a 06 Gemini in the woods and a ss On-One Gimp for the rest. Live in Hamden, Ct and ride West Rock and the local parks mostly. Usually hit Trumbull and Tyler Mill at least once a month and occasionally take trips for lift served.

Hey, just moved to boston from pittsburgh, pa and am hoping to find all the places to ride in the area. I ride a 1996 trek Y single speed. I took a winter trip a few months back to Sedona, AZ. It was amazing, got to ride every day for a week in 60-70 degree weather.

well i joined back in december after hearing about this site through a fellow forum member of another site. i original got on various mtn bike forums from taking photos of a friend of mine and posting them up for him. eventually, i started getting more interested in the actual riding aspect (though my love is still first with photographing mtn bikers). i am going to school for massage therapy and hope to focus my career in the sports/athletic areas. i went on my first real trail ride a couple of weeks ago while on vacation in TX. It was a blast. didn't realize how frightening it would be...the teeter totter was fantastic...the times i hit it dead on. i had one major spill with it and one root kicked my butt and sent me tumbling down a little hill...but all in all it was a great time riding and i hope to continue here once the warmer weather gets here. although, i don't have anyone to ride with...and though i've been to trumbull and mianus...it was to take photos...so i don't know the trails well enough to ride alone. i live in stratford, CT...divorcing with 2 kids.

oh...and my bike...we don't want to go there. it's at least 10 years old and bought at a sports store. it is completely different than the bike loaned to me in texas!

here's video of some of my rides in TX...

Brian Burns here, I ride a 07 epic carbon! WOOT! :) She is HOT! :D

I ride mostly on Cape Cod. I spend a lot of time in the Otis woods, and a good deal of time in the Long Pond Woods. I am sure I have seen a lot of you out there (otis). I am the guy with the Red Doberman and pockets full of trash from the slobs!

My best trip was to Killington last season. Its what got me BACK into Mt.biking, and what got the wife into it with me. We rode UP mt.killington, it was like 5 miles up! It took us almost 3 hours to get up the Mt, and like 20 minutes to come down! The whole climb up I am telling my Wife, come on hunny... MMM.. just think about the Lunch in the lodge (I was starving)... The whole ride up I was just thinking about what I am going to eat/drink.. MMM beer.... Well we get to the top, and I realize my freaking wallet is in the truck! I tried to get the wife to go get it but she told me to go pound sand  lol, it was a blast though. Next time I am taking a lift though! LoL. I also road at Mt.Snow, and that was a great ride too. I plan on heading all over NE this spring for some riding and down south to MD (family down there) I wanna hit up kingdom trails, and that other trail system in NH (I can't remember the name). I will get some pics up soon. I love taking pics, so I have a lot of them, I just never post... lol.

hey! I've been spending most of the time i do get on the comp over on the busted boards but a member here wanted me to post up a picture of him. I'm in Franklin MA, a freshman in high school. I primarily ride trials, when im not riding im doing schoolwork, and trying to goof with the camera. The past summer i worked for the LBS, hopefully again this summer. A few of my favorite pictures are up here, the first one is me riding, taken by me... crazy! http://www.flickr.com/photos/7258852@N07/show/
I'm pretty much a homework dweeb, but i'll try to find time to drop in here. Some older pics of me for those interested

Hey all,

I'll take a moment to say "hey." Joined NEMBA winter '06 since I finally now have some cash to donate to causes (NEMBA, Nature Conservancy, NPR) and I'm on a quest to get back into riding. Figure NEMBA is the best place to start my comeback. I've been riding since '91, but didn't hardly ride at all in college. The past 5 years I've been limited to city riding (commuting), but last year I plopped down for the blue Cannondale hardtail I wanted since I was 13, and moved out from the city some. (Medford, MA) New job is in North Andover, and I drive past Harold Parker everyday, and I will be visiting very soon (in fact I just posted a request for trail conditions for this streak of spring weather!).

Bought the wife a bike too, and this is the year we really start riding often. Mostly off road. She's interested in the fitness aspects, I was in need of another soul to join me, and we tend to do everything together. I'd rather ride slow and easy with her, than challenging alone. But that doesn't mean I wouldn't like to meet some folks and improve my own fitness and skills. Frankly, I can't bunny hop to save my life. I need to learn, seriously. It'd be cool if she, too, could meet some women riders to encourage her to form the habit, as well.

Other than that, I'm (was?) a pretty decent rider who prefers quicker, flowing stuff over excessively technical or only steep. Like to go up as well as down.

Look forward to seeing some of you in eastern mass and NH this season!

~brian

PS - pics of the bikes (http://web.mac.com/bwc/iWeb/gallery/bikes+fells.html), so new at the time that they still had the tags on. And no pedals on mine...

Sort of new, if you count being a member of NEMBA for the past two years. Recently got into riding (3 years ago) for the fitness aspects of the activity and then found out I could be a geek while riding by using my GPS to record everywhere I have been and make maps from that.

Joined NEMBA two years ago and immediately got involved with my local chapter. Now I am the Veep! Got some good stuff planned for CT this year.

Recently, found my true passion in riding is single speed. Have two now, Qball 29er and a Fetish Fixation 69er. Now that spring is here (except we just had a noreaster) I am excited to start riding again before work three times a week and riding with my kids on the weekend.

Places I like to ride include: Bennetts Pond, Upper Paugussett SF (and some local single track/horse trails in the local vicinity), Huntington, Trout Brook, Mianus, Trumbull, West Rock, and WH Rez.

I'm from coastal New Jersey, but I race both the Campmor H2H series and some of the Root 66 series. Once a month I hit Trumbull. Since I'm getting into DH more this year, its a great weekend trip. I do a lot of PayDirt with JORBA.org in NJ and now NYC since they are building a jump park. I"LL post when I visit, hopefully some of you guys want to spin Trumbull. Smiles, Jess

Hi folks. I've been lurking here for a while as I'm still a n00b. I started riding in the DC area three years ago, and had my first year in the MA region last year. I'm still getting a feel for where to ride and what stuff I can handle. I'm riding with mostly other n00bs who I helped get into mt biking in the first place.

So, I'm riding a stock gary fisher tass from 05, which suits me well...although I'm drooling over all sorts of other equipment. I'm mostly riding XC, but mostly I'm just trying not to fall down.

Be kind to me when you pass me on the trails this year.

I've been around the new england scene for almost 20 years now, been a NEMBA member off and on. I've been posting on BS and FPP, mostly riding at Rye Airfield and DH mtns. I'm getting the trail riding bug again and the best way to do that is with NEMBA, so here I am. If you chase Slappy around the woods, you've probably met me once or twice.

Just put the snow board away for the summer, and dusted off the Jamis XLT-1 and charged the night rider. Soon as this nor-easter blows over and the ground firms up a bit I'll hit the local dirt bike trails to get some pedaling in. Probably going to get some blow down on the trails, but I'll just go for a trail work ride, and clear the clutter.

Hi all,

Just wanted to take the time and introduce myself. My name is Sok (short version of full name). I'm 24yo hailing from Lowell, MA. I just started riding this year- sadly no trail riding as of yet due to weather conditions. I ride a IBEX Alpine 650 (http://www.ibexbikes.com/Bikes/ALP-650-Details.html) (http://www.ibexbikes.com/Bikes/ALP-650-Details.html), I'm all about "Bang for the buck". Overall, I'm completely staisfied with the bike. I've already put 100+ road miles on it in about 7hrs of riding. Still itching to hit the trails, but I understand the trails are still in a sensitive state- I don't want to be the cause of trail erosion/damage. I'm enjoying every minute that I'm out on my bike and it's something I can see myself doing for a long time.

Hi,
My name is Chris. I'm usually on MTBR as Rez. (Thats the name of one of my dogs.) If any one rides in Arcadia, you have most likely ran into me or the wife. I ride a white Hecker and the wife rides a white Tomac Eli ( colors match because I bought the wifes bike on discount and the only color left was white). 99% of the time we ride with a couple of Viszlas (dogs). We mostly ride on the south side of 165 because my house is on Summit road. We ride a minimum of three days a week in Arcadia. We try to travel elswhere as much as possible. In the summer we spend a lot of time in the NH house, up by Plymouth. It is a real good base camp. Close enough to jump up to the kingdom trails or millstone. The riding around the NH house is also pretty sweet. Attitash is 40 minutes away, Waterville is 20 minutes away, and the Kang is about 30 minutes. But the best hidden jewels are the ski mobile trails behind the house. Sick down hills.

Been riding as long as I can remember (now 36). Tranisitoned from BMX to road. Only rode road until I bought the first Schwin rigid. Since then numberous mountain bikes and counting.

If anyone needs company in Arcadia or needs directions look me up.

Not new by any means, but I like this thread, so...
I'm Dennis, been a nemba member for something like 10 years, been riding mt bikes for about 16.

Rode primarily XC for a long time all over NE, never raced but rode a ton of trails. Got into DH in 2000 and spent pretty much every w/e on a lift for 3 or 4 years, mostly up at Sunday River (rip). SR closed, I've gone the house/kids route and moved out to Westminster MA (lived in Lowell before that for about 15 years -Sok, you're in for a treat when you hit the trails over in Lowell-Dracut forest). Been back into mainly trail riding again for awhile, still manage to get on a lift a few times a season.

I've also been really getting into the trail-building aspect these past few years - there's lots of times now when I grab the shovel and rake instead of the bike and I think I enjoy those days just as much. Well, almost anyway. :D We've managed to build a nice little shuttle run in the neighborhood (shout out to Dark Mavis!), hopefully some of you can come check it out this season. Great spot for progression, if I do say so myself.

Currently, I'm usually on a bright orange Sinister Spinter ER (sweet ride, great local company)- you can't miss it, so say 'hey' if you see me somewhere. Other bikes I've got up and running are an Intense M1 for DH and a AZtech Flying Polack 1x8 hardtail ('aggressive' sorta steel trail bike, also made in NH), a '95 DB Axis XC singlespeeder, an old Schwinn roadie and a couple BMXers. Got a giant pile of parts that could add up to a few more decent almost-bikes in the garage too, if I ever get to sorting it all out.

Anyway, hope to see you out there.
Here're a couple shots from our shuttle trail, just cuz I like to show it off. :rad:

My name is John and I live in Worcester, MA. Riding a Trek 830 XC and am upgrading things here and there. Don't do too much heavy mountain biking as I usually have my 2 1/2 year old son on the back. Went to Rayburn in Millbury last Sunday and he was not a happy camper getting knocked around back there.

We do a lot of rail trails and I take him as far off road as my legs can handle. Carrying around an extra 35 pounds wears on ya. Anyway, did the Mass Central rail trail today (Sterling to Holden leg) without him and was able to go pretty far off the trails. I'd say it was about 22 miles round trip. Talk about getting soaked. Also recently joined the Blackstone Valley chapter. Looking forward to getting out there and meeting people.

Hi all.

Just wanted to post this open invitation to Pedro's Festival in Hancock MA July 13-15. www.pedrosfest.com

My Rides include a 1989 Wicked Fat Chance as well as a few other more modern bikes.

I encourage you all to come out and meet some freinds and make some new ones. The fest has a new site in Hancock on an Organic Vegetable Farm right around the corner from Jiminy Peak. There is great riding everywhere there but I am told it will be well worth it to ride the Jiminy lift up and ride off the back side. For Gravitationally addicted of course you can ride down the front.

The Pre reg discount is still open for this week. See you there.

Hi there. I'm Dan. Pleasure, I'm sure.

About me, huh? I live in NH, am from MA, and ride NE MA & SE NH. My baby is an old Ventana hardtail that I'm trying to get a new fork for, and the (winter/beater/loaner/*sob... current) bike is a Marin Rift Zone. I got my roots on the BMX and came over to the big bikes about 5 years back. I got into it more seriously last year, and joined NEMBA over the winter.

That'll be all for now, thanks for having me.

I just got back into mountain biking and just joined NEMBA this morning. I took a long time off from the bike, got into golfing and fell in love with it. Now I'm trying to get back into shape and remember how to ride a bike. I went to Massasoit to see what type of conditioning I'm in and found out that I'm either not opening my mouth enough or there isn't enough oxygen there. Let me tell you I was really sucking air. I had a blast just the same. I have a Specialized Stumpjumper FSR. I bought it back in the mid 90's and used to ride alot out at Otis and some at Trail of Tears. Now I live in Attleboro and really haven't explored the area for riding. I know one thing, this area seems to be more rocky and technical than the cape. I'm used to the rolling singletrack at otis. Everything here is technical, to me at least. This makes it hard to ride and get back to the point where I can tackle the hard stuff. Anyways, enough about that. I'm hoping to be able to meet people of my ability and get back into riding full time.

Hey there! I'm new to the membership and forum. My husband and I bought bikes about 10 years ago (Walmart specials) and finally upgraded to Gary Fisher's last year. I'm happy with mine but he just bought an awesome Cannondale Rush that he says feels like he's riding on clouds! Maybe next year I"ll upgrade to a nicer bike but for now, mine works. We bike at Massabesic in NH a couple times a week if we can. We bring our dog, Zak, with us who loves to run along side. We love biking single track but are looking into doing a triathlon next year at Clough State Park in NH so will probably start road biking in the spring, too.

We are always looking for people to bike and hike with and would love to meet people outside of NH, too and bike the weekends in MA, ME, VT or CT.

Well getting involved with your local mountain biking organizations is a great way to meet other mt bikers and mt bikers that do advocacy, triathalons, cyclecross and marathons. I got involved with FOMBA and SNH NEMBA about 8 years ago. There are some really terrific, positive minded, and generous people making these organiztions something to be proud of and be a part of. Most of my best friends are people i've met through these organizations. See you on the trails.

I intend to become a NEMBA member as soon as I get to New England and plan to participate in trail building/trail workdays in the area.

To answer the original questions:

Where do you ride? I don't, yet
Have any more pics? Link in my signature
Take any good biking trips? Fruita, Crested Butte, Moab, Monarch Crest (all 3 hours or less from my present residence)

But, just got diagnosed with a herniated disc (L5), and going in for steroid treatment on tuesday, HOPEFULLY this won't end my season, but I'm kinda doubtful. Just got back into biking after a 10+ year hiatus, and skiing too. Actually met one of the board members last weekend by accident at Foxboro, really nice guy, and I hope like hell to be back on my bike asap. So much fun, so many years missed out on, lots to make up for.

My name is Ken Keister and I thought I should finally post in this thread since I've been lurking for a while, but posted for the first time earlier today. I currently live in Glenwood Springs, Colorado but will be moving to the Portland, Maine area in the near future.

I intend to become a NEMBA member as soon as I get to New England and plan to participate in trail building/trail workdays in the area.

To answer the original questions:

Where do you ride? I don't, yet
Have any more pics? Link in my signature

I live on the south shore and just recently got back into it, I haven't ridden in probably 3-4 years. I had a Gary Fisher Marlin when I lived in western MA and hit up spots throughout the berkshires. I actually just bought a 2003 kona kilauea, joe murray edition from Craigslist for $250 and was looking for feedback as it's my first Kona.

Thanks a lot all!

OK DDYTDY it appears that you rode a fixie up Mt Washington..... holy crap! What gear did you use and how long did it take?

I ran a 20T chainring and a 21t cog. I used an NOS Suntour XC Pro Micro Drive crank with a 118mm BB to get an acceptable chainline.

It took me 1 hour and 43 min. It was the makeup ride for Newtons in 2007.

I had the front brake off.

My name is Adam and I joined Nemba a few weeks ago. I am just getting back into MB'ing after 10+ years away. For now I am riding an Iron Horse AT70 that I purchased 10+ years ago but I am planning on upgrading soon. I am hoping to ride all the trails in my area this summer including Borderland, Wrentham, Foxboro, Massasoit, Wompatuck. Hope to see some of you out there.

Brendan here, just moved back to Boston after 5 years abroad (Japan, Philipines, San Diego). Living in Charlestown, I've ridden the Fells, HP, Wompatuck and some North Shore style place in Plymouth. I sold my Chumba full suspension in March, and I'm riding a single speed hard tail full time (for now!).

I'm all about exploring new spots, and I'm hoping to get out on as much New England singletrack as possible this season. See you out there, open to any and all invites to hit up new or old spots!

Hi all, I'm Kristina from Leominster, MA. Brand new to biking... I used to spend my summers on a bike as a kid, but I haven't had a bike since I was 16--almost 9 years ago. I just bought a Cannondale F7 yesterday. Haven't been out yet as its been raining on and off all day. I'm really excited to get started! I'm looking for people in the area to ride with too. My friends aren't much of the outdoors-type, but I can't get enough of it!

Hey everyone, I have been mountain biking since 1990. Raced downhill for 8 years, amazing experience really improved tech skills. My normal riding spot is Mt. Pisgah in Northborough, MA since it's only 2 miles from my house. Us locals have built approximatly 8 miles of pretty technical trails up there over the past 3-4 years. We do have more in the works and occasionally add some tech features. Also ride Raybern, Millbury and Vietnam. I ride a Sinister Splinter ER and consider myself a "trail rider", not a cross country or freerider. Rides vary from 4 miles to 10 or more. I love the features built down at Vietnam, you guys are doing a great job.
Anyone wants to try out Pisgah PM me. I really enjoy showing off our trails

Hi I'm Steve. I grew up working in bike shops and racing DH, DS, and XC. Joined the Army and didn't ride much for 6 years. Got back into riding again a couple years ago. The majority of my riding takes place at Wrentham SF, Foxboro, Borderland and I patrol most weekends at Highland Mountain Bike Park. I ride a red Fisher Cake 3, a grey Trek Session 7 with a Zoke 66, and a white Rocky Mountain Switch with a Zoke 888. I'm looking to find someone that knows vietnam well so I can check it out.

Hi all, my name is Gardner, my doctor says I need to exercise so I've started biking as a fun way to get myself back in shape. I enjoy volunteer work so I'll be happy to join in on a trail crew from time to time. I am also an active member of the New Hampshire Astronomical Society.

Hello, my name is Mike. I have been riding for a while... since the Mid 90's. I started riding at Franklin forest, and have ridden at Noanet in Westwood, Wrentham forest, Upton Woods, Foxboro, and Lincoln woods. This year I have been riding mainly at Vietnam. What a great place... !

My ride is a 06' Prophet, in need of new front suspension... still useable. I enjoy mostly XC riding, but like scare myself occasionally. :)

The only trip I have taken worth mentioning is to Mount Snow back in the 90's, good time.

I went on a group ride with the bvnemba group recently, and it was a blast... will try to make more of these rides.

Hey y'all...

I just joined. I should have joined long ago. I also joined my wife, but she doesn't know that yet. I live in Cambridge and most often ride the fells out of convenience, but I long for other trails. I've been riding for many years, which should mean I'm in incredible shape...but I'm not. I'm in relatively ok shape :D.

I currently ride:

2007 Kona Stinky
Fuji Track (fixie)

I'm building up a single speed mtn bike right now with a Norco Torrent frame I have. I hope to have it run double duty as a dirt jumper/trail slayer. Granted, if it's for both, it's not that great for either, but I don't care. It's gonna be sweet.

Hi

I'm over from Australia and working in Newport, RI for two years - didn't bring my road bike as I heard the traffic was pretty extreme here. Cracked after 6 weeks and bought a 29er yesterday to commute on and 'get some dirt in my eye'. Absolutely no experience (other than as a kid and that's pre-80s!) so ready to listen and learn while, hopefully, having a blast. Anyone patient enough to show me the ropes or offer advice, just drop me a line. Particularly like to know what is essential to take (bug sprays?) - could be a new thread in itself there. Hope to get to Lincoln Woods on Friday 08/08 but gotta try and achieve that family/work/life balance thingy.

Cheers

I am new to this forum, so i would like to contribute something to bike lovers. I hope it brings more attention to the woes of bikers. The Transportation Department currently has about 4,700 bike racks installed throughout the city, with an additional 500 in the planning stages. An improvement in bike infrastructure is important because a recent study conducted by the Department of City Planning found that lack of access to secure bike parking was the primary reason cyclists did not ride to work. And also, apparently, police frown upon locking bikes onto street signs.

Howdy, folks!

My name is Fitch, and I've been riding since I was a kid. I started getting serious into mountain biking in probably `04 or so when my cousin recommended I bring my bike to the Fells. I've been in love with it ever since - I ride more each year. I currently abuse a 2005 Trek 4300DSC hardtail, and she's been pretty good to me. I'm having some trouble with it staying in gear while climbing, but that's another story...

If I'm not daydreaming about biking, I'm pounding the drums for Framingham's GRIFFON, a melodic heavy rock band that's been around for about 2 years now.

I love NEMBA and what everyone here contributes to trail advocacy and the betterment of an amazing hobby. I hope to become active in the group rides and trail maintenance days in the Boston area, and I'm looking forward to making some new friends to ride with!

Cheers,
Fitch

Hey guys, my name is Joe and I moved here about 6 weeks ago from Colorado for a job in Medway. I live in Framingham and thus far have really only ridden Vietnam, Lynn Woods and Gilbert Hills. All were pretty fun and I love east coast rocky technical stuff.

My main ride is a white Giant Trance, but I also have a Devinci Wilson DH bike that I really want to take out to Diablo or Highland as both are suppose to rock, a DJ bike that doesn't see much action, a cruzer, and a couple road bikes that are mostly for fitness more than really road riding. If ever anyone is interested in riding week nights or doing a day trip on a weekend up to Highland or somewhere please let me know as I am always looking to ride!

Hey Joe, you should check out Callahan State Park in Framingham. It's down off Edmunds Road heading towards Sudbury. One side of the park is some good rooty New England riding with some great stuff to find -- the other side of the park, crossing the road, becomse very rocky and technical. Sounds like you'd enjoy it if you like technical New England riding!

October 31st, 2008, 09:07 AM
Hi everyone! I am really new, I actually just joined last night. My name is Leeann, but everyone can call me Hattie.

I am joining this forum because I am looking for other really new people to go riding with, in an effort to keep me from hating my boyfriend. (haha! only a joke! sort of...)

Before this summer, my last bike had a little pink basket with matching streamers. It had been about 15 years since I had been on a bicycle at all. My boyfriend has been mountain biking for a few years and wanted someone to ride his road bike with. Figuring, how "hard could it be?" and about the fitness aspects, I bought a pretty looking Giant something-or-other with a $1200 pricetag. I also got on my bike for the first time for a 15 mile long ride with clipless pedals. I only fell three times, cried once, told my boyfriend I hated him too many times to remember, and couldn't sit on any curved surface for about 4 days.

We rode that about 3 more times, and then he goes and switches on me and gets SUPER back into mountain biking. He bought a Rocky Mountain a few months ago and so I (and his son when he's here every other weekend) ride the Trek he rode for a couple of seasons. Now he tells me he's thinking of selling his road bike. Grrrrrr...

He's been to two NEMBA events, and I've been to one, and it seems like a friendly group of people. So I, in an attempt to kept biking in my activities (and due to the fact that I am too stubborn to quit) would love to go out with someone who was as new as I am (I've been on the bike maybe a total of ten times).

I wouldn't even mind someone even newer, because I'd then have a chance to feel better about myself. Maybe for you men, you have girlfriends or wives that don't wanna bike? No need to be scared riding with me, because I feel like I ride the ski equivalent of the 5-year old's bunny trail when I get to go where I want. After two tries at FOMBA and colliding with a tree (yes, a tree) I was ready to swear off mountain biking completely.

p.s.- If I sound a little cynical, I apologize, but I've x-rayed mountain bikers many, many times. I see what you guys do to your bodies. Tough group!

Hey there! I currently live in SoCal but I'm headed back to Central Massachusetts in February. Up until this year I've lived in the Northeast my whole life and I can't wait to get back. I've been riding a good amount since I moved out, 50-60 miles a week on the trails. Riding has even helped me lose 32lbs!

Seems to me like the NEMBA Forums are the most popular mountain biking forum for New England and I'm here to find trails to ride when I get back and hopefully meet some people to join up with when I'm getting to know all the areas.

I currently ride a 2006 Trek Fuel EX6 with a whole lot of upgrades.

Pretty much a loner, although I've been lurking on this forum for some time; couldn't resist the opportunity to post a pic of my bike. I ride a relatively ancient Univega Land Rover Sport that my uncle bought new in '84 and passed on to me a few years later. I've been riding the wheels off it year round ever since! I've upgraded it from 10 to 15 speeds with a 48/38/28 chainring set, V-brakes (after I TIG-welded the mounting bosses on), suspension seat post, and converted it to a threadless headset so I could adapt a nearly-as-ancient early '90s Rock Shox Mag 21 Ti. I recently retired my (very) old Specialized Cannibal tires (wish they still made those), turning them into studded snow tires for winter use. It's a very comfortable, reliable ride...never broke anything (although I carry spares with me at all times) but I've worn stuff out. I don't thrash or abuse it, but I maintain/service it often. Everything about this bike is ancient!

Most of my riding is in the Wells/North Berwick/Kennebunk/Sanford area, mostly wooded trails with a few beach runs and occassional urban assaults to run errands in town. I've heard Mt. Agamenticus is really nice, would love to get dropped off in York sometime to check it out and ride the back roads home.

Hello fellow MTB'ers,

Currently residing in Lowell, MA so expect to see me around LDT riding an white IBEX Atlas. I am in the process of building a geared On One Inbred and expected to finish by March. I have been riding for about two years, though I must admit, not consistently. I joined ONE group ride on Tuesday at LDT about two years ago and was grateful for it, as I would have gotten lost on my own. Sorry for the bland intro here, I hope to see y'all on the trails in the future.

Hi all
Wow, sure sounds like alot of people are from eastern MA. Well, I'm from the ''redheaded step-child of Massachusetts" or as we say here, western MA. I just joined NEMBA last fall. I used to ride everyday about 10 years ago, but got out of it for alot of reasons that I won't bore you with. Anyway, under doctors orders to get in shape I started mnt biking on an old Gary Fisher hard tail. Needless to say I became addicted. Last summer I upgraded to a new Rocky Mountain Element. LOVE IT !!! Three years and 45 pounds later I'm still like a junkie hooked on smack. Anyway, I ride mostly around my house on trails between Hatfield and Williamsburg, but I also love Bacherlor Street and also the "ice house" in Florence.

I love Bluff Point, been riding there off and on for years! PM me if you want to hook up some saturday. I can't do evening rides until school get out or the days get longer.

Agamenticus is really nice, would love to get dropped off in York sometime to check it out and ride the back roads home.

http://i636.photobucket.com/albums/uu90/cfmvw/Dsc02733.jpg

Another mountain biker named Tom told me about this site...if you read this, Tom, give me a shout sometime!

Thats awesome. My very first MTB I ever bought myself was a rigid Univega. I traded it in a few months later for a full suspension Univega that I still have. So when you re ready for the upgrade its about a 1995 or 1996. lol

Hey all,
My girlfriend and I just moved out to NH from Michigan and we are eagerly awaiting the start of this season. I ride just one bike right now, a 2005 Kona King frame that I built up with my favorite mix of parts specifically for endurance racing. I have also raced a few downhills and enjoy the occasional day with a big bike and a chairlift, but mostly I just like to be outside and riding with people. My girlfriend has been riding for couple seasons and is my #1 adventure racing teammate. She also wants to race her first couple triathalons this year. We will soon be in the Exeter area and hope to make some friends that don't mind showing us around the trails.

Welcome, Exeter is a good location, Fort Rock will be close to home. The trails there are currently closed for mud season, but typically open up around the end of april.
For lead rides in the area, there's the occasional Southern NH NEMBA ride or i beleive Wheel Power is still leading a weekly Tuesday night ride there.

I am new to mountain biking and new to nemba. i joined rather quickly when i saw the t-shirt contest :) i am in the somerville area so i mostly ride in the fells, and am still swearing at all the loose gravel :) but it is a really nice, close place to ride. i was excited to help with trail maintnance in the fells a few weeks ago but sad to see it was canceled.

i am constantly trying to improve as a rider, or crying since i get frustrated easily. :) but i do love riding and being outside. there is a sport for every season and i love them all :)

Hey bikers, just joined the forum and joining NEMBA as I write. Moved to Quincy all the way from cold Finland where I've been riding DH and free on rooty, rocky, wet and slippery tracks for the better part of the last five years.

Now I went and ordered a trail bike and can't wait to get it to go and try all the nice New England trails I've been reading about. Vietnam seems like a place to check out, so hopefully I'll be seeing some of you over there during the summer.

I am new to the NEMBA! I currently live in Edinburgh, Scotland and am moving back to the Boston area. Looking to purchase a new ride and get out around some of the area trails! Pretty new to MTB, was introduced to it here in Scotland and LOVE it! I currently have a Kona Caldera '09 Hardtail. Looking for Full suspension when I return. Wish they sold the Cube in the states!
Hopefully, will meet some of you when I get back in July!

Hello all-

I'm also new to the area... Moved to Boston from sunny New Mexico. Just a bit of a surroundings change to say the least. I'm a cat1 mtb and cat3 roadie. Trying to figure out how one trains in the city. For instance, what do we do for 3 min intervals? Looking for a mild incline without a ton of stoplights, that's easy to ride to from Boston/West end. Anyhow if anyone would like to share a ride sometime, send me an email. gasteps@gmail.com. Hope to ride with you all soon!

New to mountain biking, new to NEMBA.

(Well, not unless you count riding my old Diamondback down some trails in a somewhat uncontrolled fashion over a decade ago while I was in high school.)

I'm a super/mega-clydesdale, living in Marlborough and working in Chelmsford, riding a Specialized Hardrock. I've been slowly exploring Great Brook Farm, Thanksgiving Forest, and Russell Mill in Carlisle/Chelmsford and the Yellick/SuAsCo/ARHS trails in Northborough.

I'm looking to make it out to a few trail days this season and learn the ropes of maintaining trails so I can help out in my favorite haunts.

I've been riding on Cape Ann for the last year. I'm new to mountain biking, but it feels about as natural as anything I ever do. I haven't joined NEMBA as a paying member, but I do my share of trail cleanup everywhere I go. I ride alone up here but would love to ride with others. The trails seem endless and I haven't tired of any of it, but would love to ride anywhere. The backyard is just incredibly convenient though! I bought an '04 Gary Fischer Cake off of Craigslist last summer. It has been a good first bike for me. I love to ride most any terrain, though there are many sections out here that I end up walking/carrying.

Just moved back to the Milford area (I'm 200 yards down the road from Vietnam) and recently got into mountain biking. As others said it feels as natural as anything I've ever tried. I have a specialized hardrock currently but I'm ready to upgrade to a full-suspension and I've been looking at the 2009 Giant Reign X1. I ride with local friends but they sometimes lack interest and tend to destroy their under-equipped bikes attempting mild to large jumps and gaps.

I'm making great progress on my skill level and my confidence grows every single ride I head out. I generally stick around the Ashland Reservoir area...it's mostly hiking but has some downhills and terrain that provides a good workout with a hardtail. You can really cruise the paths and work on balance and braking. Also, there is a great downhill which you need to hike-a-bike to get to at the very back of the reservoir where the dam is. If your curious exactly where just PM me. It's short but sweet for ashland.

Hey peeps,
Grew up racing BMX and freestyling in Beverly MA. Got a MTB in my early 20's and rode a bit in Lynn Woods and others. Life work and woman got in the way for about 10 years, but I'm 35 and back at it with a passion. Living in North Haven CT and riding everywhere I can. Just bought a SS rigid Redline Monocog 29er. It's really just a BMX bike with big shoes! Gears are a pain.
Tyler Mill is 2 miles from my house, so I would love to keep that spot top notch and help make it better. See ya around.

Hi All,

New member here. I guess I have always enjoyed riding in the woods. I got the urge when I was about 12 years old on an old Murray sting-ray with banana seat and "ape hanger" handlebars. That was almost 40 years ago. I have ridden off an on since then.

In the late 70's early 80's I was a roadie. I road a modified Schwinn LeTour and did two Tour of the Scioto River Valley (TORSRV) rides. These are basically a century one day followed by a return century. I got married and rode until the mid 80's and then my wife and I had kids. I flirted with mountain biking in the mid 90's on a Mongoose Threshold which was really a road bike frame converted to mountain biking. Not much fun and the bike ended up in a shed and I got really fat.

This past year I decided to change all that. I joined weight watchers and have shed about 75lbs so far. An article in Weight Watchers online site told about the health benefits of mountain biking. I pulled out my college age son's Specialized Hardrock HR and started tooling around the Ashland Town Woods (lots of deadfall) and then Callahan State Park in Framingham. I was hooked again. I found out about NEMBA and have been riding ever since. I got an early Christmas gift, which I cannot ride until Christmas and that is a 2009 Cannondale F3. (I did do a test ride). In the meantime the Specialized is holding up and I look forward to riding more.

I can't wait to go on some NEMBA rides and check out Vietnam, which is about 10 minutes from my house.

Feel free to drop me a line

I just completed my first year of mountain biking and now I'm totally addicted. My brother and I started by purchasing new bikes last christmas (Both hardtails) and started racing in the spring. We traveled through four states and competed in 9 races. In October we both joined NEMBA at the Wicked Ride of the East.

We have since increased our riding and participation. We both purchased new full suspension bikes (Trek Fuel and Fuji Reveal) and we are training hard for next year. If anyone wants to read about our adventures, I started keeping a blog. You can read it at: http://www.recessionbiker.blogspot.com

Well, hello. I'm Ken and I am a new cyclist. I ride an old Diamondback Sorrento that I bought years and years ago. I rode it VERY little and it sat untill 4 or 5 years ago when I rode with some friends 8 or 9 time over the summer on some local trails. I just started riding again this summer, road work mostly but some trails. I LIKE trail riding better but the main goal is fitness and weight loss so road it is. I am planning on building a bike over the winter. I have a Trek 4300 frame in size xtra-small. Most of the components are shot but the frame seems solid. I want to build this bike up to be dedicated off road for the spring. I like the fact that it's "too small" for me. It feels like a BMX bike. The seat will never be high enough for me to sit and pedal but that's kinda the point on this bike. I'm op on the north shore, Haverhill actually, and like to ride Kenoza Lake. I think that I might go out for a while tomorrow as a matter of fact.

Hi all, I'm getting back into mountain biking after a long time off. I just got my new rig and can't wait to get it off the street and into the dirt. I live in Framingham so I plan to do a lot of riding in Callahan, and I work in Cambridge so I'm hoping to ride the Fells a lot as well. I'm also looking forward to exploring new trails. The Fells rides that GBNEMBA put on sound really cool, and I'm looking forward to them. If anyone's planning to ride Callahan (or anywhere near Framingham) on weekday nights, and don't mind having a born again newbie tag along let me know.

Hello all:

I'm back into mountain biking after a 10 year break following high school. Now I'm old and out of shape! I might not have the best rig out there but I'm riding on a new '10 Gary Fisher Tarpon that I love. I can't believe how much bike tech has advanced and gotten less expensive in the past decade!

Anyway, I'm biking out of Rockland MA and have been using Wompatuck for my rides. If anyone out there wants to ride with somebody that's not really in shape and getting back into it, PM me. I'm trying to get out every nice Saturday and Sunday morning with one mid-week ride thrown in there after work.

Hey all. Decided last year, in my early 30s, that I wanted to try something new that would get me back outside more often, so I bought a Specialized FSR XC last summer and started riding. Really enjoyed it, so over the winter I upgraded to clipless and disc brakes. I am in the Metrowest (Mass) area, so I like trying a variety of options nearby. Hoping to check out Foxboro/Franklin (not Nam) soon.

I usually can only ride on the weekends, and definitely can't come close to what some of you guys are doing out there, but would love to find others around my level to ride with.

Today I had one of those great riding days. I was heading out to the gym and saw my stead sitting forlornly in the garage. It said "ride me". So, I chucked the gym bag got on my biking shorts grabbed my camel and took off for the Ashland Town Forest, just up the street. I hit the trails hard, kicking up the speed. My wheels magically seemed to know the best way around the roots and rocks. It even guided me around or over some dead-fall with no problems. I was standing tall in the saddle putting on the speed coming out of turns. I was really pumping and burning in the mid to higher gears on some nice uphill stretches. Very little time visiting granny gear today. After an hour it was over too soon. But I had freaking blast!!!

I've started coming to this site a bit to start to learn a bit more about advocacy and riding in your region. I'm a Northeasterner living in Dixie, currently, but am planning a return. I've been asking around about great places to live and ride between eastern PA and southern NH. It'd be icing on the cake if I can find a dedicated group to sling (knobbies and Pulaski)dirt with when I get up there.

Right now, I ride in the Asheville, NC area (Pisgah Area SORBA), but I miss real rock and I want a good excuse to build something burly;) I'm a custom framebuilder by trade, and I specialize in 29ers, with my sub-specialty being technical-terrain 29ers. My bike is a Hammerschmidt-equipped 29er hardtail with a new Talas and plenty of color, including I-9/Flows from my friends just up the road.

I look forward to meeting some of y'all soon.

Hi All,

I have been riding in NE CT and Douglas State Park lately. Most of the time I ride out my front door in Pomfret and hit sections of the Airline trail and state land. I used to live outside of Danielson and rode a *lot* around the Quinebaug river in the '90s. The local bike shop was Ordinary Bike and now is under new ownership as Danielson Adventure Sports and is very active locally.

My wife and I made it up to Killington for a weekend this year. Next year hope to get some more trips up in NH, VT and some NEMBA rides.

I just got an new Jamis and have been out several since the second week of March.

Hello, longtime Nemba member, but new to posting, I've lurked for while. I ride mostly southeast MA, Freetown, Otis, Swansea (Abrams Rock), but I've ridden most of the popular riding spots in eastern MA. No racer, but I like to ride my bike, build trails, ride some more, work on my bikes, ride, etc.

I've got three mountain bikes currently functional. A Fatback, A Misfit Dissent ss, and a K2 Lithium full susp. Pretty much covers all my needs.

Hi All,
I'm Alani.....been lurking in the forums fo a while and finally decided to take the plunge. Lived all over (Lancashire England, California, Kiel Germany, New Jersey, and now Connecticut for the last few years). I have always stuck with Specialized bikes (I have a 29'er hardrock HT and a stumpjumper full suspension). I've been very curious about the trails in New England and trying to improve my skills. I'm hoping to make some good riding friends / connections here since you never know what you might learn from the next person. In addition I'm hoping to compete as I improve on my skills so this indeed should be fun.

Hi everyone,

I'm Chris. Age 31. I used to mtn bike in high school and college but it's been about 10 years since I last put my foot to the pedals. I grew up in Foxboro, MA so I became very familiar with the F. Gilbert State forest. My wife and I recently moved to Londonderry, NH to be closer to her family. With the Musquash Conservation Area only 2 miles down the road, I thought it would be a great time to get back into it. I just purchased a hard tail Gary Fisher Wahoo bike off craigslist and plan to do some riding this fall to prepare for the ski season. Once I gain my confidence back, I'll check back here and see what kind of local group rides are taking place. I'll be looking for places to ride anywhere from Centeral NH to Eastern Mass.

'ello,
My name is Christopher. I was introduced to MTB by my friend Doug this past spring when he was adamant about dragging me to Batchelor Street for what I thought was going to be an afternoon of pure hell, and instead turned into an awesome day in the woods. I ride a '07 Gary Fisher Rig, (poorly,in my opinion), and just about everyone has told me that I'm either crazy, stupid, ballsy, or all of the above for starting out on a single speed. I like a challenge, I like the bike, and I don't think I would have it any other way.

Hello folks, I'm alastair. I live in NJ and ride singlespeed (rigid / 29er) for the most part. I've been riding mountain bikes since around 1988. I think I've crossed paths with a couple of forum members at singlespeedapalooza and the Stewart Six Pack. I figured I'd join the forum to try and get some inside tips on where to ride when I escape to north! For what it's worth, we have (almost) year round riding on some of my local trails; Allaire State park, Hartshorne Woods. Something to keep in mind if any of you guys get sick of xc skiing and boarding by mid-winter.

Hey, My name is Bobby Hannant. I live in Carver MA. As of right now I ride a 2011 Specialized Rockhopper Comp and I'll be purchasing a Specialized Status II in a couple weeks. I ride Pine Hills and Wompy but I'm looking for more places to ride and people to ride with.

Hi all. Im brand new here as well. I ride a bit at Nam and all over for a few years and will dig up a good winter pic to post.
Winter is the best riding by far if do-able!

I recently knocked a camera loose as I hit the ground twice at Nam about 2 weeks ago.
Its waterproof so If you see it, turn it on and you will see an awesome shot of *** on his copper wheeled stead airborn over a drop and jump.
I got too close and filled the frame.
Yeah a good shot.
We must retrieve this picture from the squirrels and allow the cycling public to see this athlete in action.

Interesting, if you look close at this pic you can see the crust Im on just broke loose beneath the wheel.
Never knew that, till I saw my buds perfect shot...

Ill keep an eye on post if anyone found camera.
Thanks, Ill see you out there!

hey all, new to the the forum from southern maine. NOT a memba member, I've been attempting to catch up with my local chapter (greater portland) and see what they are about but have failed due to there not being much going on in the winter and me being busy. I'll probably end up joining in the spring.

do mostly cross country / trail riding and getting into DH now. I ride most at Bradbury state park, black strap reserve, and libby hills since its in my back yard. I have plans to check out some more local spots come spring.

for bikes I have a ellsworth sub 22 for xc, an ellsworth id for trail, and an rocky mountian rm6 for dh. I built up a steel jamis dakota as a single speed in the fall and am really digging that. Also getting into tandem riding offroad. Actually much easier than I expected, gets really easy after you log some time and gain some trust.
