Greetings,

Anyone been around HP since the temps hit 60°?

New to the boards, newish to North Shore riding. I got a job in North Andover late last year, haven't yet been to HP, but it taunts me everyday on my commute to work. And I'm thinking about riding there tomorrow after work (mar 14). I guess there is an upside to earlier DST.

I've got new pedals to ride, and I'm tired of the road bike + trainer combo.

Thanks,
~brian

Unfortunately I think that it will be a muddy mess, best to stay off the trails until they firm up.

Yeah? I can't believe the trails are in good enough shape to ride - can someone confirm this for me, cuz if they are, I'm heading over.
Just can't believe it though.

Hey Brian,

Welcome to the North Shore. I live in Andover and HP is a fun place. So is Ward Reservation, on Prospect Rd off of 125. Maybe 2 miles from the 114/125 intersection. HP is easy to get lost or difficult to find good trails. Ward is much smaller and each turn is labeled. As others have mentioned, stay off the trails because it will cause alot of damage until the ground can soak up all the moisture or it freezes again. I know the warm weather is tempting but the top is muddy/wet then about 4" down is still frozen. Take the road bike off the trainer and take it for a ride. I've been doing lunch time rides in the Wilmington/N.Reading/Wakefield/Reading area. Always nice to get out on the bike for an hour in the heat of the day. Sorry, I haven't live here long enough to tell you which areas drain and are ridable the quickest. Maybe someone else knows?

Dave

I'm going to leave it to your judgement, as you're up there and see the trails, and I'm not, but I hope you read this link:

So, it was a wet, sloppy mess. I got covered. I did about 5 minutes of trail riding on needle packed trails, where I wouldn't cause erosion. I turned around because it wasn't going to be all needles and it was still flippin wet... went to find a fire road. Passed a 4Runner parked squarely in front of the "don't park here - fire access" sign - brilliant! And up into the fireroad... even worse... so wet, and the ground was so soft that it was like riding with two flat tires while a crowd of 5 year olds with squirt guns shot you with muddy water... turned around, and headed for the car. About 30 min riding, total. Saw one other rider.

Funny thing was: worst conditions were in the parking area. My little Rabbit nearly needed a snorkel with the olympic pool-sized puddles...

I love snow, but I wish the gods hadn't pulled this day out so soon as to taunt me... and now we're back to winter... :-(
