View Full Version : Seasonal Fells Closure

Just a reminder that the Fells is closed until April 15th. As Spring approaches it is important that we obey this policy. The trails get very muddy as the ground starts to thaw and the mud is deep. Riding on the trails in this condition is very destructive and should be avoided.

The following is a quote from another trail user who sent a comment to the land manager. This trail user is not fond of bikes at the Fells but thought it might be useful for people to see how the process unfolds. The land manager asked me to help get the word out.

"Apparently there is mountain biking with studded tires going on this week in the Fells.
It's one big reason the Fells hiking trails are so deplorable.

WOW, Apparently the guy that posted the report doesn't even care that he's not supposed to be riding there. What a selfish tool.

I don't understand why anyone has to ride these few closed areas. It's 3 and a half months. And you can typically travel to other areas that are not effected by the closures and the conditions areway better. It makes no sense to me why some folks are so inconsiderate.

Alright, I'll get off my :soapbox: now!

The scary thing about T Grimble post is that the hiker who contacted the land manager was surfing bike web sites looking for violators. The fact that someone is breaking the law then posting about it is a whoooole other issue...

Welcome to the land of the FoF. We have been dealing with this type of poo-poo for ages.

I am gonna start mtb riding in there every evening starting tonight, and if I see anyone on a bike I'll tell them no riding. that should send the right message :)

I messed up here as when I was responding about conditions I wasn't even remotely paying attention to where he was riding. I should have paid more attention and brought it up to him. I was just bummed the weather had changed and Ward and HP trails were covered in deep snow. I thought if someone was riding somewhere near me then maybe by chance those trails would represent the conditions at HP or Ward. Live and learn to monitor where someone is riding. I've never ridden at Middlesex Fells, so it didn't even cross my mind. I do remember someone posting last rides before closures at Lynn Woods and Middlesex Fells around December. Maybe when those parks open up in the spring I'll ride them for the first time since moving to Mass..

As for monitoring, it happens. I've lived with it for the past 10 years in the Bay Area.
