Needs a hub to match...
I've finally started a chopper...thing is, I've been real busy, so I only have the hub done. Next step, get the rear end started...
This specimen started as a 120mm wide hub (from an old ten speed - hub shell in orig form on right).
Cut the shell in half, widened it & the axle, and re-assembled/welded, and now its approx 200mm wide hub...
the 135mm onyx hub shows the sheer width of this beast...

Time for another project.

More work tonight.
Rim came (it's a 26 X 3 instead of 4), but still HUGE, this was a good decision, considering the $10 deal (http://www.kendausa.com/bicycle/weeklyspecials.htm) I got on a Kenda Flame 26X3 tire...
Laced it up, and starting to figure out how the rear will sit.
For comparison, that's a 26 X 2.35 tire mtd on a Mavic 317 that's standing next to the beast...

Chris, this little project better not be depleting the funds for your BH w/ Rohloff! We've got some drops to cross of the list, eh?
Dave
BTW, I do have to admit that rim and tire look pretty cool...

Oh beleive me - this is a LOW budget build. Trying to make everything with what I have in the parts box etc. So far the only purchase has been the fat rim (69.00) and the tires (10 each) + ship. For the frame - Splat ought'a recognize the ole univega mtb frame I cut up. I also picked up some steel DOM tubes (odd cutoffs) which were just given to me over at Turner Steel in Bridgewater (nice folks BTW). I forsee little money spent except for maybe the rattlecan paint job and maybe a cool looking seat...something old skool looking...like maybe - still deciding though... http://www.hiwheel.com/site_graphics/accessories/saddle2.jpg
Slomojo - I've got a small mig welder - no brazing stuff (yet).

When I learned to weld(oxy-acetylene) I quickly realized how important jigs and clamps and the like are...we had to learn how to join two pieces without clamps and no distortion...not so easy with a torch. How/what do you use to keep it all aligned?

Welding w/ a MIG machine is soooooo easy compared to anything else. Cant forget, this is a chopper, so nothin is DEAD on perfect...but it will ride nice & straight...and look cool...
I've been using all kinds of clamps, a large straight edge and level, string and working with the beast just sitting clamped up on the floor. No jigs here...
For each joint, I just tack it, then align it, then add a few more tacks till it holds firm enough to continue the mockup...when she's lookin straight, and true, I'll go around afterwards, and finish off the welds, checking basic alignment as I go. I figure if I have to, I'll go around when she's all welded up and with a sanding disc, smooth any weld joints that are rough...
I welcome any subject that dares to ride it...heh :burndev:

OK, last night I did a lillte tube bending and fit up - experimentation for how the Top tube will look...' had to quit early, b/c I need more tubing to make a downtube (I was going to put a bend in the Univega downtube, and use it to save on fabrication time - b/c the BB already attached etc), but it's just too short. So I ordered an eccentric BB and shell from NovaCycle supply ($30), and will pick up a piece of 1-1/4 EMT for the downtube from my friend (the same guy who lent me the bender).
Soon as the BB arrives, the fabrication will pick up pace...

Then things realy picked up pace, and before I knew it the basic frame was close to finished...here's a couple mock ups,
Next up to figure out how I'll do the fork ends...and then to start work on the drivetrain (which will include a jackshaft & maybe even gears).

So, what is going in that huge space beneath the seat? A beer cooler perhaps? Awesome job!
