I talked to someone who commutes on part of the bike loop through the fells. He said on the northwest section someone had put cut up logs across a muddy section. Is this nemba work? Maybe someone from GB nemba can comment? Their website has been down as of late.

this is definitely not gbnemba work. when we fix a section of trail we make sure to leave a hardened surface that is sustainable for years...

the type of work you are describing happens all over the fells by well-meaning riders and hikers. during the winter, we will be walking the entire loop and make note of trouble spots such as this to put into our 2007 work plan for the DCR to approve. thanks for bringing it to our attention!

yes, the gbnemba website is currently down due to some technical issues and dhould be back up in a week or so.

happy new year!

I was hiking in the Fells yesterday (really- no bike!) and came across what sounds like what was mentioned but it was on the orange trail- not on the loop. It actually looks like an improvement over the mud pit but certainly not up to NEMBA standards.

On the sort of same subject, I walked for a while with a guy on the White trail and he was claiming that parts of it had been rerouted. Where he had needed to go left in the past, now it seemed he went to the right. No clue as to which part he was talking about but does anybody know of any actual trail rerouting that has occured? Plenty of well worn braids but nothing that looked different to me.

There is a quiet old man that has been doing lots of trail work at the intersection of Dike's Road and the Orange and White Trails in the north west area of the fells. He hikes in from fallon road dragging a shovel and a trash can. Some of what he does it good, some is bad. I would assume he has some connection with the fof, but I've never asked him so he could just be some nut job working on all his own. I've never seen this guy give a biker a dirty look or dirty words, so maybe he's not with the fof at all ;-)

As far as reroutes, the fof has been rerouting sections of the white trail all over the fells. This fact seemed to surprise Dick Stewart the DCR guy when I told it to him. I guess he was under the impression that no one was doing any more reroutes for the time being. But as usual, the rules only apply to some groups.
