Though it pains me to let the weatherman make decisions for me--all indicators point to a total washout for Sunday. Instead of scrambling to re-organize at the last minute (or cancelling) We're going to move the Fun Ride to SATURDAY NOVEMBER 18th (next weekend!). Same Time 12:00pm-same info same great day of riding, demo bikes, post ride drinks planned.

Sorry about the incovenience,

Hope to see you all there! Nov 18th-SATURDAY

Yeah--it's rainy now--but it looks like a good chance for dry weather on SATURDAY--so put on your stickiest tires and come on out and ride the rough and ready (yet generally leafless!) Wendell Trails. Registration is at Noon!

We might--just might might have a brand new trail ready to be 'broken in'.

Looks like we will definately be using the new 'Wickett Ridge Trail' on Saturday. (7 days plan to finished!?!) I was out there for an hour and a half this AM clearing the low brush off what we didn't get done Sunday. One more hard rake on the last 1/4 mile or so and we should be good to go.

The new trail will be kinda tough for the first 20 riders in either direction since the ground is pretty soft and it hasn't seen any tires yet, but it will definately improve as the day goes on.

See you all on Saturday

H.

Hey-Finally picked a place for the post-Wendell ride gathering--It will be the French King Restaurant (and Motel) on Rte 2 (the French King Highway) only about 5-10 minutes from the State Forest.

Nicer place than I realized-good lounge/ tavern area that they ar opening early just for us bikers (2:30-6ish). Normally they are closed 2-5 on Saturdays but I promised them that Bikers are hungry/ thirsty lot so please try to stick around after the ride and enjoy the burger and brew you'll so richly deserve.

I'll give out directions at the registration--and yes, this time I'll get my right and left straight!

Hey Liam

Any chance you have a map with all the Wendell trails on it? Also if you could lay out the ride on it, that would be great. I am a bit confused riding there and I'm trying to get a better lay of the land.

Thanks for any help you can give.

The map on the DCR web site www.mass.gov/dcr ... click through to Wendell, is complete except for one new trail (and one under construction).

If I get a chance in the next day or so I will highlight the trails we used for the ride.

Good GPS=ing-

The State is presently (we hope) making signs for the trail heads.

Here's the Names-

First Trail out from Start-XC Trail
Trail Coming Back around Pond (the really rocky one)-Ruggles Pond Loop to Pond Trail

That brought you back to the start near the Parking Area.

3rd Trail-Lower Trail to the Lookouts -this brought you to a forest road, you went left down the hill and made a right on a trail Back in and Up-this trail is the Upper Trail to the Lookouts.

Along the way-this trail merged with the M&M.

4rth Trail: Near the Top You made a right onto the Moose Trax Trail

This Dumped you out onto DAMON CAMP Road. You went Right Down Dammon Camp, made a quick left onto Baker Rd-and then Turned Right onto another Trail-This Trail (the switchback one) is the Lower Hannah Swarton.

At the Bottom of this trail you went left onto the Maple Leaf Trail (yeah..the really muddy one) which weaved in and out of the road until it reached...

The Nipmuck Trail-This trail turns and twists in a mostly downhill direction-lots of small jumpable rocks-fun trail I think.

At the Bottom you were dumped out onto Baker Rd-you went left and dug in for a good grinder climb.

At the Top of Baker Rd-You went Right onto the UPPER HANNAH SWARTON-a long, rocky, fairly challenging Trail--my favorite, in fact.

At the very end of this trail you arrived at DAVIS RD (again, another old, dirt forest rd)-you went left-up a short climb, then made another left onto Damon Camp Rd-and then-up a few hundred Yards made a Right onto the M&M Trail-and began a long, and with Saturday's conditions-pretty challenging climb up to the lookouts.

From the Lookouts you Descended the Upper and Lower Lookout traills you had initially climbed--back down to the Ruggles pond Parking area.

Hopefully-by the Spring we'll hjave our trail signs up-and the new parkk map will be all-inclusive!

Hope you all had Fun--with the Week of dry weather--I'd bet by next weekend Wendell will ride a whole lot better!

Now it is starting to make sense. Now I can go back and ride without going in circles . All the dirt roads look alike. Also what is the trail accross Baker Rd. from the Nipmuck?
I had A great time on the ride, I even enjoyed the muddy challenge.

Thanks Again

Terry,

The trail on the map across Baker from the Nipmuck is flagged only at this point. Any time you want to come join us for a clip, saw and rake day - it might really be a trail. Ranger Bryant was only a tad ahead of the trail crew when he penciled it in for the 2006 map at about this time last year.
