Hi Folks,

I realize that this is short notice but there is a meeting of the Quabbin Watershed Advisory Committee (QWAC) tomorrow night (10/16) at 7:30 at the Quabbin headquarters in Belchertown, (by Winsor Dam). One of the major items on their agenda is an “alternate route for the M&M trail.” I don’t know exactly what that means but if past history is any indicator, you can be sure that any singletrack trails in the Quabbin would be closed to MTB use. Let’s see if we can get a few folks down there to see what it is all about. Something else that you may be unaware of is the effort to have the M&M designated a NATIONAL scenic trail. I’ve attended several meetings regarding this and there has been no open effort to ban bikes from the trail but it is up to the land owners to either allow bikes or not. If the trail gets re-routed through the Quabbin, as nice as that would make the trail, we in all likelihood would be banned from that section.

Alf,

It might not be as bad as it sounds. The M&M is being rerouted because, Cowles Lumber in Amherst, the landowner for much of the current trail between the Notch and Leverett, is opposed to Federal involvement. In order for the National Scenic Trails designation to occur, each landowner must give the OK. Cowles is said to have no issues with keeping the existing sections of trail accessible to current users. The Quabbin re-route would be the Federally Sanctioned loop.

If I could, I would go push the Q folks for bike access, but I have other obligations this evening.

Hope someone from the Valley can make it though.

H.
