I have a 4 and 7 year old, the 7 has been out in the woods for 2-3 years and does pretty good. My 4 year old learned how to ride w/out training wheels 4 days ago and wanted to go into the woods, and wholy crap that kid kicks but faster and stronger than his older brother over logs, through sand he just does not stop, best thing about it is both my kids want to mtn bike just like daddy.

Hey Liam and Mac, Bring'em out on the 30th. I posted on the Mass Ride board. Having a kids ride in Robinson. Super kid terrain for the ride, plus jumps and a track right next to my house. Kids will have a ball.

Also, Funny story (funny cause he didn't get hurt)... Had my son on the back of the MTB tandem (with stoker kit) when he was about four years old. This was in the evening after work and I guess he was a little tired. Cruising along a trail and the conversation got a little slow. No noise from the back seat and then I feel a little resistance on the next pedal stroke. With a quick stop and check, the little guy nodded off and his foot got behind the crank-arm. Not even any pain for him (luckily), but I am pretty sure he wasn't doing his portion of the push... ;)
