Well, what happens in other National Forests can set precedents for the whole country.
The Forest Service is proposing a 45 mile extension to this classic trail, BUT they are suggesting prohibiting mountain bikes from all but the first 11 miles of it. This is wrong - mountain biking is a quiet, low-impact activity that should be allowed on all of the extension.
There's a quick and simple form to fill out here: http://www.imba.com/news/action_alerts/09_06/09_14_maah_daah_hey.html
Please take a couple minutes to do this.

I've considered the Maah Daah Hey as a destination for a bike trip (only 6 hours from the in-laws house in MN). Certainly as an 11 mile route, it wouldn't be worth it.

Just to clarify - the 11 mile part of the proposed extension is in addition to the existing trail, which is close to 100 miles long.
AA can probably give me info on this.

As Rob pointed out the exclusion is for the new section of the maah daah hey. As it stands now the nothernmost section (in the north unit of Roosevelt NP) is off limits to bikes so you cant ride the 1st 10 miles or so. There are several places to get onto the legal part of the trail and travel 85 of so miles. Once you get to the boundry of the south unit of Roosevelt NP bikes are no longer allowed however the Buffalo gap trail goes around the park and puts you into Medora ND where the trail now ends. I'm not sure if the new extension is on the nothern or southern end, either way it sucks to be excluded. There is still 100 miles or so of legal fast and fun singletrack (even with the very start and end off limits). It would be a shame to have more new trail and limited bike access.

Here's another one you will want to respond to. It's a thread from the MTBR website. It's about an area of central Idaho called the "White Clouds" being designated wilderness. We all know what that means...NO BIKES! My buddies and I just returned from a riding trip to this area and it would be an absolute travesty to see it closed to bikes.
