Well we had a good group show up on a very warm Saturday morning for Merrimacks Valleys last official trail day for 2006. We had a tight hair pin turn we wanted to berm in for a smoother faster flow. The pictures show the progression from start to finish.

Is this in a state forest on public land? If so, I just think, "what do other user groups think of us, when they see this?" Don't get me wrong, this looks like some great and hard work, with a very fun result, but shouldn't it be saved for private land?

Reasonable point Spicy. Yes this is in a state forest. We were given permission by the DCR to create a 1 & 1/2 mile new trail that would cater to the needs of the mountain bike community. We didn't have to worry about how the walkers, hikers and equestrians would feel about it. We had to deal with those constraints with all our previous trail building in the forest. As a result this trail has a much different flow than what you might normally find in the forest. Besides the berm doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the walkers and hikers. Hey I'll bet the trail runners can slingshot out of those corners pretty good.

I'd imagine other users think "wow, it's awesome that those guys are really taking the time to do trail work" and "boy, those MTBers have really had a postive impact here over the past few years", or even "wow, sure is a lot easier to roll a keg around a corner with a berm there" :)
Seriously though, it's just a little dirt and rock. Not like it's some kind of rickety NS stunt or some other eyesore. I can't imagine any reasonable user would have a problem with that sort of thing.
