Found an old U-Haul rental bike a couple months ago and have spent some time stripping and painting the frame. Here's the result.

Not likely, we were talking about oldest MTB, if we were going to do an oldest bike, period, I'd be bringing my yet to be started 1963 English 3-speed restoration project. :)

I assume the downtube cable is a shifter for an internal hub or something?? Is that original too?
Pretty wild and nice job...

Nice ride. It looks like an old Ross "Beach Boss" 3 speed cruiser. We sold a bunch of those back in early 80s at the LBS I worked at (Nauset Cycle, Orleans, MA) which is no longer in business...
Looks like the stock "snake belly" tires are still goin' strong...

The frame reminds me of the old Merlin "Newsboy" that was out a few years back, what I wouldn't do to get ahold of one of those......

I like the Roots but I still like the lines of the Newsboy better, then again I would take either in a heartbeat...

Why CP, why?
I was just getting over the desire to get a Retrotec (http://www.ingliscycles.com/bikes_retrotec.php) or the Spicer Ti cruiser (http://www.spicercycles.com/index.cgi?cat=18&sub_cat=29er%20Frames&prod_id=510&cat_desc=Mountain)
Damnit!

Yup, 3-speed shimano internal hub, doesn't shift quite right but I'll tear into that one of these days and fix it. That's original to the bike.
