Holy SPAM invasion---hey PK I thought we got rid of this
I just noticed that on other big (and frankly way busier) forums with similar architecture they don't have this kind of SPAM (I'm talking MTBR.COM and EPICSKI>COM in particular)..
Oh well, if they're going to send us spam I hope they send those great porn and viagra links again (I already have all the electronics I need!)

Hey Superb,
No one was more bummed than me to see this morning's first spam. The spammer was an individual (not some spider program) who legitimately registered, put in appropriate contact information, and used a valid email account which he/she used to validate their registration. As such, it's next to impossible to block. Naturally, the person, the email address, and IP address has been permanently banned.
Believe me, manual spam also takes place on other boards, and I'm told that all they can do is remove it right away and ban the user.
My alternatives (none of which are good) are too:
1) Moderate ALL forum posts (too time comsuming and a hassle). Unfortunately, we can't moderate a new user's first post to vet them. This could be handy.
2) Prevent hotmail or yahoo or other anonymous email accounts from registering (I doubt many people would like this)
So..... be assured that the new forum software is very good at dealing with automated spammers, the VAST majority. Please report any suspect posts and don't waste too much bandwidth responding to them.
Thanks for your understanding.

manual spam is easier to deal with than robotic spam at least...doesn't pour in so fast
