My great grandmother was riding a 40 pound singlespeed, with fat tires on the dirt in Maine, way before any of those Marin guys were so much as a romantic thought in there ancesters minds. Needless to say there was no pavement anywhere then. So what if it had a basket full of daisy's and a horn (hoot-hoot) mounted on the handle bars.

It's funny that this is brought up. My wife asked me when I first got interested "What's the big deal ? We rode our bikes in the woods all the time when we were kids."

Those guys from Marin might have invented a marketing concept called "mountain biking", but they didn't invent riding a bicycle on dirt.
But, I can certainly appreciate the advances in cycling technology.

I also recall a tv news story or something showing muontain biking in Plymouth, NH many years ago. If I remember correctly, the guys involved said they had to repack the coaster brakes after a run or two.
