I have an old 12 speed frame that I have been putting together as a flat bar road bike. I have 2 questions.

#1. This frame has the old style r-der hanger. The type that bolts through the dropsouts. Will this accomodate a new r-der? Also, will there be a problem using regular quick release hubs?

#2. Will MTB shifters work with road deraileurs? Looking at a set of LX with a 105 f-der and an ultegra r-der?

#1 - sounds like you intend on installing new (to this bike) wheels w/ quick release hubs...that correct? I've seen some older Suntour deraileur hangers that are affixed to a dropout like this:http://www.sheldonbrown.com/images/dropf-nohang.gif
I've never experimented with a newer deraileur (8 or 9 speed) being instaslled on one of them, but I bet you could get it to work. I do know they have the same threads as newer deraileur hanger bolts.

As for quick release question...if you get road hubs with 130mm rear axle dimension, and use a 135 mm mtb skewer, you're sure to have enough threads/skewer length to get the job done (b/c those type hangers make the over locknut dimension wider then most frames).

Also, another potential problem, the rear spacing on this older frame - IE it may not be spaced for a 130MM road hub - it possible has 126 mm spacing or even 120. A steel frame can be re-spaced (I've done a few myself) but youd need to have the frame re-aligned. Some do it your-selfers have done this successfully on old sturdy steel road frames, but I personaly wouldn't part-take of a re-alignment job on a big buck (steel) frame myself. The good bike shops have the tools and expertise to do this.

as for #2 - yes - should work fine.

Good luck.

Thanks Chris,

I tested the deraileur hanger threads and it will fit. The spacing is fine for a set of road wheels. The drop out you posted is what I am looking at and the hanger is one of the old Suntour models. On the front I should have mentioned I am running an Ultegra 53-39 and not a triple. I figured I would just not use the granny index.
