View Full Version : Illegal trails in Trail of Tears

So I parked at the Popple Bottom lot for TOT yesterday, and noticed a new sign warning of a fine for illegal trail blazing. I found one new trail (or the beginnings of one. Didn't check it out.), a few new sally lines, and few new turns around trees on an otherwise straight and flowing trail. Apparently somebody got bored with the straight trail and decided to put a few curves in it.

I blocked off most of them.

Just thought I'd share.

I can't take this Post any longer.

THERE ARE NO ILLEGAL TRAILS BEING CUT @ TRAIL OF TEARS!

This post is all about Grandstanding.

Being a daily rider @ ToT I've seen this "Today I will be..." a self-appointed "Trail Warden" work...(word) WTF...who in thier right mind goes into a place (a NEMBA place) as COOL and well maintained as ToT, & starts blocking off so-called "Sally Lines". Then post here like it's news to us! Hey Man! Don't do us any favors!

THOSE lines have been there for over 30 years! There is no damage by keeping an existing 1 rock (over) line on the same ST!!!! The water runs the same man! OR hey! Maybe, someone might break your rules and actually run the trail the other way...Like everyday! Or maybe a newbee wants to try an actual loop. God help us if they don't take your perfered line. So you run a NEMBA course a time or so a year, it's NOT a this or nothing line. Those trees you talk about are 40 feet up the start from PB & are not MTB lines. The new cut "trail" that you did not to investigate is a nothing...Get it yet? Please leave "closures" to the appointed! You are starting something dangerous here & I for one won't stand for it. You are dangerous!

May it be Noted; here on NEMBA: NO ILLEGAL TRAILS HAVE BEEN CUT! This is a very careless post, the kind that ends up as an exhibit when people want to shut down MTB in a location.

This person needs to spend some time helping out like the locals & Pick up some "CRAP" at the trailheads or Cut and Remove a Mile of Briars! (Can't you please Do something in your life positive that does not dictate on others your views or in this case demand we use your line.)

Please stop this bandstanding about what you did for everyone else. You are a self admitted hardnose liberal who spends his time telling everyone what thier doing wrong. Why don't you do something good today and put your hand over your heart and salute the Amercan Flag and those who fight and those who have fought for your freedom speech ... & your life; as only you know it....ummm.

BTW: Those "Signs" apply to You, as well. Should I see you put another branch across without permission, I'll report you. Ya know...FINES $$$$. Share the wealth, man...pretty good and dually noted.

I'm not familiar with the trail situation down there. I love TOT but wont go there till after the summer crunch is over. But you do have to love his passion.

Well, that MAY because I took the "sally line" blockage away. God Dam!...what is wrong with you...do you think I'm the problem here?

If you did not notice the work, I question your "all the time". The only conclusion I can think of is you don't like the fact I can't stand anti-americans! You know me & I know you....I'm just trying to keep things safe & sound. This jerk off's Post is insane!

Saying their are illegal trails going on here is simply untrue...I'm sorry if the passion got in my way. I love the place & will do everything/anything to keep it goiing that way. Ya....just like the good old USA.

I've never seen a place where sally lines were not a problem. Blocking them is good.

Anti-American sally lines - we should nuke those suckers.

Am I the only one that hears Twilight Zone music when reading this?

And what do sally lines have to do with liberals/Americans/freedom of speech?

Who is to determine what is a "sally line"? To me, the only thing that qualifies is obviously fresh redirection through brush or underbrush. I've seen it often at both Otis and Foxboro, and most likely done by novice motorized bike riders. Well, at Foxboro that is most likely the case. (I've blocked off a couple of reroutes) I don't get the Otis one. I mean, it's not like the trails there are so difficult as to require "sally lines". I haven't ridden TOT much, but what I remember of it, it's somewhat similar to Otis (hard and fast), so I don't really understand the necessity of "sally lines". But again, who's to say what the definition is. Seems pretty subjective to me. On the other hand, this passionate wacko with two posts obviously doesn't care to understand the principles behind trail care and conservation. And unfortunately, there are all too many people like him who just feel as though, "Hey, I'm gonna ride when I like, where I like, and how I like. So screw you." Thinking about consequences is apparantly not a priority. Kind of like going on an anti-Nemba rant on a NEMBA bulletin board. He obviously is not out for some new friends. Kind of makes it hard to consider his point of view.

This will be a thread to bump to the top a year or two from now. Packman's post is priceless :)

Damn those bleeding-heart liberals who didn't want to ride OVER the log because the log has feelings!

I'm still confused about his first post to be completely honest. My reading and comprehension skills aren't that de-evolved to get the gist of his statements. ::)

For the record, my post was only the first line of his post.

I ride there at least 2 times a week and many weeks 3-4 times. If the trails were blocked, and you unblocked them, and thus I never saw the blockage, then you should be happy that someone who rides there all the time didn't notice the blocks - you were successful. Congrats.
So pat yourself on the back (if you're not so angry that you'll hurt yourself).

Packman ...

Damn!!

I LOVE riding the Trail of Tears, too. One of my most favorite spots here on the Cape. It’s my main place to ride.

But when you pump your chest and say you are going to protect it at all costs, even if that means unblocking stuff YOU THINK NEEDS TO BE UNBLOCKED, makes you just as bad as the people you bash.

Why is that?

BECAUSE YOU DON”T OWN THE TRAIL OF TEARS the Town of Barnstable does. And any trail touching should be left up to the town and the Cape Cod NEMBA Chapter who are the ones that have the know-how and authority, in my book, to makes changes.

Trailbait didn’t mean harm as you don’t, I gather.

BUT if you both see something you don’t like, why can’t you report it to the town and NEMBA so they can dispatch people to the problem? Because the thing that maybe pissing you off on the trail could be be a project that both the town and NEMBA are working on, together or separately. Packman, the stuff you are unblocking could be a project that 's in-the-works or just getting of the ground. It may piss somebody off. And when they find out who's been doing it, they might just kick out the mountain bikers. Unlikely. But you never know. I have seen stuff like this happen.

Besides, telling the right people will give them the chance to log it, so they can keep an eye on the problem.

If you call Trailbait reckless well so are you because you are not consulting anybody, either. You just assume, too, and do what you want.

I think if you had been working closely with the town or NEMBA on the trails you would have said so. And if you are, these organizations are in big trouble and should be embarrassed.

Your posts may have passion, but they lack respect and are just plain nasty. Keep your political assumptions where they belong -- on the political forum of this site. This area is for trail advocacy!

Hopefully anybody riding anywhere in New England will report trail problems or misgivings to the whoever is in charge of the area so things can be fixed the right way. Well-meaning people can do the most harm!

Hi Tina - I mostly agree with you, BUT...

I'd be hesitant to go to a town or land manager and whine about sally lines or trail braiding. If people do that too often, maybe the mountain bikers will be perceived as being the problem.

I like the local approach - find out who does the bulk of the maintenance and see how they'd like to handle it (per your suggestion to contact Cape Cod NEMBA).

Well, maybe after a few ESL classes he'll return and we'll be able to read his posts without rubbing our eyes so much.

Wow, I've been away too long. ???

I ride there all the time too, and I notice when a new trail/ sally line has been blazed, and I block them off.

Stick to the trails that are already there, or get official permission to make new ones. If you can't stick to the established trails, go ride someplace you can.

not that he'll post here again, anway......
