View Full Version : Upper body sports?

I ruptured my left achilles tendon playing ultimate frisbee with a few other families last weekend. This leaves me unable to walk for the next 10 to 12 weeks.

As a result, I need to find things to do for the next few months that don't involve one's legs.

I'm thinking that (flat water) kayaking is a good option, provided I don't have to carry the boat.

Any other ideas?

If you're not up to campusing, go get yourself a big, heavy, unweildly military surplus commie gun like I did, and go out and do curls under the guise of target shooting:

Haha, campusing would have me in surgery for both elbows as well!

I do have a couple of .22s that I could go plinking on some junk TV sets.

But I'm thinking a more dynamic workout. One-legged road riding?

You can do a lot of weight training just sitting on a bench and using dumbells. Just hobble over on your good leg put the weights beside the bench and have a seat. You can usually find 3 months for 99.00 at the gyms during the summer.

Heck you can still throw a FRISBEE can't you, your the designated thrower, train those trick dogs! That is so harsh, sorry I was sooo looking forward to going to Whistler with you and this is just dumb bad luck. >:( pffft... I can't even deal. Sending you healing vibes everyday, damn I'm going to miss riding with you this year. I now officially hate frisbees, God help anyone who throws one at me.

legless activities??? hummm lets see, besides routinely slap boxing with the one eyed champ :o, a hand cycle would be a good upper body workout. I'm not sold on the water thing with a cast...that seems more dangerous than f*cking frrisbee.

get well.

check out the knee scooter. You could probably get some speed going on one of these. :)

Other sport ideas:
- fishing
- golf
- lawn bowling
- croquet
- skydiving
- wheelchair racing
- or... tennis?

I got all excited about the hand cycles, but $2k to $3k is probably not worth it for a few months. I think kayaking is still the best option so far - what's the worst that could happen, I get wet? Maybe drown?

This is a great idea! I found a few of these for about $300, but the wheels would not work well off-road (and apparently you can't steer a lot of them). How about a little kids bike with the seat modified to fit my leg!? I think it's time to go dump picking!

I don't know about some of those other ideas, Z. One-legged golf? My boy kicks my ass when I have two good legs. Skydiving would be great, until one had to land. Ooooph!

I'm all excited about fabbing up an off-road knee machine. AOF, fire up the torch!

Thanks!!

Kayaking would be good as long as you are able to swim with your injury if you needed to.

What about rowing (machine)...it wouldn't do much to get you out but it would keep you moving. You could also consider working out with free weights and some gyms (Bally's) have a Nautilus Gravitron machine for weight assisted upper body workouts that is great for arms, shoulders, and back. If you can kneel on the bench, you work out with your body weight so if you wanted to work out with 50 lbs and you weigh 200 lbs, you would set the machine at 150. Or you can flip the bench out of the way and lift your whole body. Again it won't get you outside (other than the drive to the gym) but it will give you a good upper body workout.

Happy healing.

Sorry to hear about the achilles tear, Radair. That's a serious rip.

I've got a Weider Crossbow Platinum. Versatile, and the price here is half what I paid.

Hey Radair,

I had an achilles rupture a few years ago that I got playing softball. Let me guess on this but you're some 40+ year old trying to recapture his youth. Anyway, I'm sure that the doctors out there are going to vehemently disagree with me on this point but I found that cycling was one of the few things that I COULD DO without pain. It was tough when I had to get off for any reason though. It makes you ride through more stuff! Just my 2 cents. Get well.

Hey, I never lost my youth! I can't help it if I'm trapped in this 48 year old body.

Thanks for those encouraging words. I agree; I should be able to ride, at least on the road, long before those quacks say I can.

(Please don't tell my surgeon I said that.)

The rowing machine is very good exercise for upper body + cardio.

However I think I probably bend my ankle more on a rowing machine then on the bike. Overall it hits your legs much less then cycling though so it might not hurt.

Todd, is that you in disguise? If not, you're scaring me, Alf.

Nope that's not me, but like I told you before, you do need to get a urban Kilt to go with that cast. Free balls lead to inner peace.

24 ounce curls at Desmond O'Malleys, Owen O'Leary's work for me.

I don't think they need to be Irish pubs, but it works for me.

Does anyone think this is funny?

Radair isn't scared as long as Toddski is the one suggesting the kilt. Hmmm....! ;D

As you know, Todd has given me the kilt suggestion already. I think he likes my legs, and I'm OK with that.

But if some other guy wants me to ride his tandem wearing a kilt, I get a little concerned. :o

This sucks Rob, get well soon.

I was hoping I could convince you to give me a tour of your area this year, so hopefully by the fall you'll be atop 2 wheels again.

I do know how it feels not to be able to ride, when my name was "ArmIsBroken".

Fortunately, the MIG was one of my tools that was high enough in my basement not to get ruined by the flooding. Have I mentioned that flooding sucks, on so many levels!

I am working on a trike, that we could change into arm power instead of leg power.
e-mail me if you are interested, it'll probably be about 2 weeks before I can start working on any projects again though.

Radair,

Sorry about the, ummm miscommunication. I was simply making an awkward reference to Jisch's previous reference to another thread that I started about riding a tandem with my wife. Unless you look a lot like her I really don't want to see you in a kilt. But if I do see you in one whilst riding your bike I'll at least know who you are! ;D

Phew, it didn't take long for that discussion to get twisted and morphed around! My comments are only in jest. Lighten up people!

Good one Dan, but weren't the guns being discussed in girlygirl's thread about riding alone in the woods?

Check this out!

Boy did this thread get off topic! ;D Get out and ride Radair!

Sorry to hear you are one of the flood victims, Dan! I'll drop you a line with what I'm thinking.

Alf - All in good fun, no worries.

Rob,

Sorry to hear of your injury....stay away from frisbee....that's a dangerous sport. From now on stick to mountain biking.
