Once again, the video awards were awesome. Many thanks to Z and Pete for all the hard work. Thanks to Carlin Dunne for being there too. This night is something that I really look forward to all year. All the films were all great but my personal favorite was "I fell". We can all relate to how she felt.

That was my first time there and I thought it was well done and entertaining. Great to see a successful fundraiser put on by NEMBA. I was disappointed however with the moderator.

She prefaced one of the films by saying, "If you have kids, you may want to consider having them leave the room."

Hmmm. I thought this was a family event, put on by a family friendly organization, but, its nice of her to offer the warning.

Without hesitation however, she then added, "If you're offended by the words '****' or '************', then you might want to leave."

Ok. So much for a warning, if you did want to leave. She then repeated '****' and '************' in another context. She seemed to think this was pretty funny.

The film was then screened and the words in question were slightly discernable. I doubt many of the 5-12 year olds in the audience would have picked up on any of the language if it had not been so celebrated by the moderator.

Again, the event overall was great, but I think there could be a little more consideration given to those with young kids who paid $30 a head for what was assumed to be a family event.

Maybe there just needs to be a simple warning on the tickets that mature language/themes/nudity/violence/humor/beer will be present and parents should act accordingly when considering bringing children.

Option 2: The event organizers take extra care to ensure the NEMBA video awards event is family-friendly. This includes screening entries for mature content, briefing speakers ahead of time, etc.

Here's my pragmatic take: This is brewery-sponsered mountain bike video contest where the best entries were screened. I can't think of a single mountain bike related DVD since the original Kranked series that doesn't have some PG-13+ related content. Offensive song lyrics, Jenna, hot tubs and blowup dolls on tandem bikes come to mind as things I'd not want my kids to see. I'd anticipate the possibility of the same content at an event like the NEMBA video awards.

I guess I was not clear in my point. It was not so much the content of any of the videos as it was the disregard the mc had for an all-ages audience. When "mf" was uttered during the film, it was in the context of a crash. As a mountain biker we can all relate to that.

Uttering 'mf' multiple times when you're speaking to a mixed audience shows a lack of grasp on the Englinsh language.

Hi Scott O,

I agree that the use of the profanity was probably unnecessary, and I apologize to any offence that was taken by those attending with kids.

I hope this didn't completely affect your enjoyment of the evening, and personally I think that it was a very good time.

best,

Relax Scott O. I'm sure Z did'nt mean to offend anyone. And if there is anyone who can be decribed as respectful, dedicated, and proffesional it's Z.

Well said pk.

I never viewed this as a family event myself, but I never read the promo either ... maybe it was. I prefer it be an adult event and a little more swearing .. but that's just me. ;)

Also had a good time there ... sure, I griped the vids were not the quality of earlier years ... and I dearly miss the 2 free beer tickets, but beyond that it's a good time and thanks to those who work hard making it possible.

I still can't believe that gal won that bike??? Just not right. :-\

Unfortunately I couldn't make it. However, I have to wonder what it means to be respectful and professional and still make statements like "If you're offended by the words '****' or '****', then you might want to leave." I assume since they are bleeped, there are neither respectful nor professional. At least not most professions. Of course I mean no disrespect to Z. My only exposure to her has been via the forums and I have always found her to be completely non-offensive.

But like I said, I wasn't there.

Is posting of the videos up to the film makers or are they out there already?

You mean no disrespect to Z?.......so who is it you are referring to? The event was great. A very good time for all. Z did a hell of a job and her statement in question was insignificant as to the event as a whole.

Thanks for your opinion........ Considering you were not there..

Hi Folks,

In retrospect, I can see how some people more sensitive about strong language wouldn't have appreciated my joke. Apologies to those that were offended.

My parents were always laid-back about swearing. They always said to their friends telling dirty jokes: "If she knows what it means, then she already knows what it means. If not, then it won't matter either way." But I forget my family is a bit weird.

In any case, what I learned: we should have been more clear that this particular party is meant to be PG-13. Although NEMBA is a very family-friendly organization, not every activity can appeal to all members, and the video awards is really not meant to be a family event. After all, it's a Saturday night bash going until 11PM where we drain 4 kegs... maybe it wasn't obvious enough from the format alone and we could have been more clear in the announcement.

Glad the rest of you liked the show! I had a hell of a time, and was really impressed with the videos this year. It was fun to see the variety and the creativity.

Thanks especially to Philip for coordinating the logistics, to Pete for doing a bang-up job as VJ, to all of our volunteers and sponsors for their support, and to Carlin Dunne for coming all the way out from SoCal and doing a great job as co-host. And for telling us about his giant penis trophy. :o That was definitely a highlight for me.

(Oops, darn. So much for being professional...!)

Anyway, all joking aside, it was particularly awesome to see a lot of my old riding buddies at the event and to do a little North Shore ride Saturday, to remind us of what we left behind when we moved to LA. I miss you guys!

Take Care,
Z

I know you're being sarcastic, but you have got to be kidding right? Real stretch trying to make a connection there. ::)

Beer being served does not qualify something as an adult only event. Every restuarant is town would lose huge amounts of their business if dad couldn't have a beer and little Jimmy couldn't join along for a grilled cheese.

One of the winners at this years event was a family film about a little girls birthday party.

The online flyer from this featured pics of kids and families at last years event. Had to assume this year's event would be similar.

Oh well, kids are gonna hear these words eventually.

Good time Saturday night. My wife would never say "it" even if she stepped in "it", let alone the "f" bomb. I couldn't believe
she was laughing out loud at "I fell". One of our group commented that the lady must have been a long lost relative of mine. Too funny. Now, how do I get a copy of that flick!!!

I believe that was me! This is the first Tuesday of the month, shouldn't you be in line for your Social Security check? :P

As usually this was a fun time, the only disappointment I had was that the 2 best produced films(IMO) were not chosen by the "Expert" judges.

I think that's what it comes down to. We had our 11-year old there and Z's joke only rose to the level of a slightly awkward moment rather than something that offended us.

We did know what we were getting into in terms of the nature of the event and our expectations were met. A great time, a couple of innocent (but perhaps unnecessary on Z's part) swear words, and most importantly more money to save the trails.

I certainly would not want to change the nature of the event or screen the films to accommodate the handful of kids who attend. I think PG-13 is a good place to be.

Great job Z, just watch your language next time :-)

Hey Slomo, I thought being a male chauvinist pig lost its appeal in the 50s. You're making the rest of us civilized guys look bad. I know a half dozen women riders who could grind your sorry ass into the dirt.

Wow ... what a zinga there.
First off, I'm flattered that you read my posts that carefully.
I was bummed she won it, and not me.

I apologize if any women or "civilized men" are ever offended by anything from me. I'm light hearted about this stuff, yet ussually careless with the words. I tip my hat to the 6 women that can kick my sorry ass. It ain't much to brag about. 8)

Question for you my friend ....
Why would you feel the need to create a new identity to post such an attacking note? Please PM me your address so we can mail you out some testicles. :P ;D

I was pissed that that woman won it as well. Nothing to do with her gender, but she didn't seem like she was overly fired up about. Would've been nice for the person who won it to have gotten on and done a drop off the stage.

Easy there fellas. You all sound like sore losers. IT WAS A RAFFLE, not a contest. Also, give Gino a break (and an apology if you're man enough) b/c Carolyn DelGuercio is Gino's wife.
They are BOTH avid mountain bikers, and participate in NEMBA actively.

if you really think the bike is that sweet - go pick one up in your size from the guy who:

1. donated the bike in the first place.
2. paid for the upfront costs of putting on the whole event
3. enabled carlin dunne to be there to entertain you.
4. gave away 2 free tuneups in the raffle
5. gave away a dozen pairs of socks in the schwag toss.
6. always steps up whenever nemba asks.

thats an awful lot of giving from a small lbs.

SO GO BUY SOMETHING instead of complaining that you didn't win something that was given out in the spirit of a good cause.
