View Full Version : MTB Vacation Recommendations?

I am planning a solo MTB vacation this summer/fall, so I thought I'd ask the forum about suggetions on how to arrange this.

My obvious first thought was to do this thru a tour company. But, like many on-line researches, I quickly became overwhelmed with options on where to go and who to pick to book thru.

I want to do a 5-7 day trip, riding 10-20 miles per day. More of a wilderness experience than hard-core dusk to dawn riding. I have moderate endurance and am fairly capable on technical single track, but I also want to stop and smell the roses every now and then.

I've heard of similar operations for motorcycle tours, where each day is spent going to a new destination while the tour company shuttles your gear to the next stop on the journey. This way I can be just me, my bike and my camelbak.

My vision of what I want is to get out in the wilderness and stay there once I start riding or at least not doing loops out and back to the same hotel every night. I assume there are outfitters out there who can set me up with an itinerary, comfortable lodging and meals and support staff should I need them. Budget is not as much a concern as quality of the exprerience...I need some serious time to myself and can think of no better way to get there than on my trusty MTB!

So my questions are:
A) Best North America locations for this type trip (I was thinking Alaska, but it seems my options are limited)
B) Best tour company/outfitter for the suggested location.

Thanks in advance for any help you can pass my way!!

Though somewhat lame from a technical perspective, you can do a hut to hut ride from Durango to Moab. Its not exactly "supported", but the huts are supplied. I don't know the cost... A friend of mine did it last summer. The views are supposed to be amazing.

I have some friends who did a organized tour in Oregon and they had blast. They liked the terrain and the miles weren't crazy. PM me if you want me to find out more info from them.

You might want to check this outfit out: http://www.backcountrybiker.com/index.html

I have no experience with them, but sounds like what you are looking for.

I have done two trips with Escape Adventures - http://www.escapeadventures.com/. First to North Rim of Grand Canyon and second, to Canyon Lands National Park.

Have Fun....

Thank you all for the help. The websites and suggestions have given me much to digest...I am however, narrowing down my selection to the BC (Calgary, Banff) area. Any thoughts about that? It just seems so wild and beautiful and way too much ground to cover in the time I have, but I think I could have fun trying. ;D
