apparently, there have been more fires recently at various spots in the fells.
however thanks to the presence and presence of mind of a couple of responsible mountain bike riders, at least 2 fires have been snuffed before they had a chance to do any damage.
this past sunday, the day after the park opened to mountain biking, one fire was on the winchester side of the fells. the rider used his cell phone to contact and direct winchester fire department to the precise location of the fire within 15 minutes of spotting a small blaze that started in the stump of a fallen tree.
the other fire was well under way on the medford side of the fells and was spotted by another rider on wednesday evening. he too was able to use his cell phone to direct medford fd to the precise location in minutes and they were able to contain and put it out before too much damage occured.
many thanks go out to joe levine and john masone, both of whom are members of this forum, for quick and decisive action to save our much beloved riding spot.
the woods are extremely dry right now and every rider out there should be prepared for similar emergencies. hopefully, tomorrow's rain will alleviate the fire danger for a while.
have a good weekend!
