Hello,
I just picked up an '05 Tacoma and it came with a factory bed protector which won't accept my homemade truck bed rack from my old Tacoma. I have a 2" by 4" with 2 Thule fork mounts screwed into that would fit nicely into two slots in my old bed protector. I am trying to use the same type deal but this time, put the rack on the bed floor, but can't figure a way to stop it from slipping around. Any suggestions? Any comments would be appreciated. Not really interested in spending a lot of dough. Thanks!

I have a 98 Tacoma and I use a Saris Triple Trak in my bed. I also have a cap and laid down some carpet in the bed, so the track doesn't move.
You could attatch rubber feet to the bottom of the 2X4, and that should stop the board from moving.

You can screw the mounts to the rim of the truck bed. Very secure and you can lock the bikes up...

Just add some 2x4 "T" legs to your current set up that will wedge the rack between the wheel wells and the front wall of the bed. This will hold it in place and the extra weight will help anchor it. It will look some thing like this bad pictograph,

Well said Capt. But how's this for simple.
Try this:
I had an old 2 by 8 laying around...cut it to the width between the wheel wells and the back of the bed...bolted the mounts to the thing, and have been happily toting those bikes around for years. Not too much slipsliding around either. Be sure to off set the mounts so you don't have hanlebar problems.

stupid question:
Why do you need a bike rack in a truck bed? How many bikes and other crap do you plan on putting in your truck? Last summer I went camping, had 3 bikes and all my camping gear quite comfortably in the back of my Sonoma. ???

I find that without a rack in the back of the truck it is difficult to carry more than one bike (unless you want to lay them on top of each other) and that the bike slides around while you are driving. I recently put a cap on my Toyota pickup and havent put a rack of any type in the bed yet, the result is I never drive to rides when there is multiple people driving together.

I have 2000 Tacoma with a cap and I use the Thule mounts that are similiar to the ones pictured above. I bolted them directly to the floor of the bed. Depending bed liner type, you may be able to bolt directly through it with some longer bolts a extra washers as spacers. If its real thick bedliner, cut a 4x3 section out of it and use a peice of hardwood cut to the same demension and bolt though it.
Don't let bike flop around loose in your truck. I used to do this and had to make a quick stop and trashed one of the shifters.
Congrates on your new Tacoma. How many miles on the old one? I'm on my 3rd Toyota truck, I trade about every 10 years.

Thanks for all of the ideas! Going to work on it tomorrow.
I had a '00 Tacoma, had 110K mi before I gave it to my father, thing still runs brand new. I do love my new one though, much different truck.
Thanks again!

Why don’t you just get the Toyota fork mount for the rail? It is kind of flexy. I know you said you don’t want to spend the dough but my set up works slick. Toyota cross rails in the bed and Yakima Boa’s on the bar. I also have my fork mount board in the back, so I can carry three bikes in the bed, plus two big bikes in my Yakima trailer hitch “hook up”. I’ll post a pic when I get home. Do a search over at Toyota nation some guys have creative set ups. http://www.toyotanation.com/forum/f61

Fork mount from toyota bolts onto tie down cleats that came with the truck and fits into the rails of the bed, costs about $30. but is overpriced. You could try to attach your old fork mounts to the cleats.

getto version= put the board in the back of the bed between the tie hooks, secure with bungee. Bikes ride backwards but allows easy access to mounts.

Todd, the capture on the first picture leaves you out with your arms in the air jumping out of the back of the truck, did you post the wrong picture?

mink, what planet are you from?
ok, can I haul some bikes or what! Really most of the time, I'll just throw the bike in the back on the floor, but for road trips with a gang its a versatile system.

no my bike is not that short, the rails slide in tracks, works good with ski clamps too.

Oh, my planet...I think there should be someone from my planet that has seen the earth folk who will jump out of the back of their Tacoma for free gas money.

OK, it's not a Tacoma or a "real" pick-up for that matter, but it does give me an excuse to post some pics of my new rig and my DIY rack.
I just picked up an '04 Subaru Baja Turbo

I put my Yakima King Cobra on top

And built a DIY rack in the back out of my old Thule, a 2x4 and some stainless turnbuckles.

Works pretty slick

Problem soloved....there was no way I was paying $40 for each fork mount from Toyota.....I screwed the factory tie down adapter for my bed rails to some modified 2 by 4's....seems pretty solid. I will let you all know if my bike comes ripping off the back of my truck :o
Toddski, thanks for the motivation and record, nice DIY rack!
Sorry I can't post the pics....says my file size is too big. If anyone is interested I can email them a pic. Thanks

Nice new wheels Record and a great bike set up! I'll drag race you to Highland!
Wiggum, nice job, I was thinking that you could to that with a board and the cleats, the toyota fork mounts really do suck. I can post the pic for you.. todd@mtanemba.org
