the relief effort needs a few good bike mechanics! (new orleans, 9th ward)
we're the common ground collective, a grassroots volunteer organization
providing hope and support to new orleans residents, helping them return
and the city to rebuild. in our quest to reach out farther (we have
house gutting crews, health clinics, legal services, a womens center,
media center, bioremediation, afterschool program, distribution centers,
etc...), we have started a bike shop which has been evolving constantly
and rapidly and we could use extra hands (greasy, dirty ones, preferably!).
we salvage bikes from all over the city and over a month ago we received
a decent donation from jamis. the pile is growing-- we need to strip
bikes, build bikes, maintain community bikes, keep the shop running,
possibly hold workshops, help it evolve into more of a co-op, include
and reach out to more community members.
we have space for you, food for you, bikes for you to work on! people in
the community constantly look for working bikes, as little public
transportation runs, most resources were lost in the flood, and nola
just happens to be a very bikeable city. in addition, volunteers use
bikes as their main source of transportation, so having a good fleet
would be helpful.
email me, liz, at lichtman@gwu.edu. let me know any questions you have
and when you think you could come. the sooner the better!
