wanted: cheap commuter bike

Hi NEMBA-membahs

We have a family friend whose daughter just moved back home, with her little toddler son. She is now a single mom and asked me (the "bike guy") about getting a bike to commute on and take her son to the beach.

If anyone has something that might work, please let me know. She is about 5'7" or so. Really anything is fine, and i can fix it up for her. Also if you have the little seat for the rear rack or an extra trailer or something, that would be great.

I would pay money for this stuff, just not a ton. She went to the bike shop and then came back home because she could not afford a new bike, and I told her not to get a Walmart bike because they have some safety issues.

I am on cape cod very close to otis. In the meantime i will check the usual craigslist, etc. but i know sometimes folks have stuff lying around.

I have an old coppi frame with downtube shifters a campy rear derailleur, six speed cluster, long reach brakes, drop bars, cranks, and an old wheelset to match.

It is definitely a fixer upper. If she could use the parts you are welcome to them, no charge. It sounds like she could use something a little different, but I thought I would offer.


I can make a measurement of the frame if you are interested. I think it is the equivalent of a 54 frame. It is not a sloping tube frame.

Thanks. If you could get that bike down to cape cod, i would take it. if it's old, i can set it up singlespeed with flat bars for her. probably not worth shipping it, though.

there could even be some brew in it for you... and snow and mud free riding this weekend at otis.

I do not make it down that way too often, but I will see if I can work something out. My old man lives in Middleborough, and we used to go down to the cape together in my former life as a dirtbiker. I would love to do some riding at Otis. I used to go in there to the BMX races when my cousin was racing.

I will let you know what I can work out.

As another idea, we might be able to set up some sort of NEMBA relay to get the bike down to you before the summer gets under way.
