OK, a few (probably stupid) SS tech questions

1.) Can I replace the standard dropout on an aluminum frame to convert it to a SS ( I currently run a Surly Singleator, which is OK but I want something a bit more reliable) And if you can have this done who does it and what would it cost.. OR is it more cost effective to buy a used SS frame?

2.) Currently I am running a 32/16 ratio, and am thinking of increasing to an 18. Can I cannabalize an existing cassette or would it be better to get an actual SS rear cog ( strength, weight etc..)

Any input would be appreciated!

Hmmm

Question #1 if you are talking about removing the existing dropout and re-welding the frame w/ an adjustable dropout it would be cheaper getting a used SS specific frame. To reweld alum requires the frame to be re-heat treated, I doubt that you could find anyone willing to do the work. The singulator isnt a bad option. The other choice you have is the ENO eccentric hub

Question #2 If you have an old cassette you can get an 18t cog from go for it. I ran an 18t cassette cosg for years before it wore out. The only time cassette cogs are a bad option is when they get over 20t or so (too much flex)
