View Full Version : Wendell Trail heroes Never Sleep!

In the wee cold hours of the morning, local trail heroes Mark Courtemanche (he used to be a mountain biker ;D) and jason Duncan got out and flagged a brand new trail from the Lookouts to baker Rd/Damon Camp rd junction. This trail will add another 2-3 miles to the Wendell trail system. It should be fast with a few technical sections (similar to the nipmuck trail).

This is a great addition for a few reasons-1. It's high on the priority of Land manager Bryant Steart who has wanted a continuation of the trail to the lookouts since we started working in the park last december.

2. it provides a really logical way to head back to the frontside of the park without climbing the backside of the M&M. Which leads to point 3. it keeps a lot of bike users off the backside of the M&M which avoids user conflict while serving up the same great view and same great descent fro the lookouts to Ruggles pond). This trail will be our priority in the early spring trail building days (yes even over the Hannah Swarton).

Anyway-cheers to mark and jason!

Excellent!

Just for clarification, are we still OK to use the backside of the M&M, should the desire strike? (I kinda' like that section.)

Post the next trail day or send out an e-mail. I want to help out!

this trail is at the request of the park ranger as a "short cut " to the lookouts, to be used by all.
I too like the back section of the M&M, however until we work out a good fix for the water problem, on the trail, at the bottom of the M&M we should all tread lightly or avoid that area, I mean it is only a 50-75 ft section of water so just get off and walk it, this will just keep us good with park management and locals in the area.
And Yeah we will keep you and all posted on upcoming trail work days. just remember, any and all interested in having their e-mail address added to our trail day list send me or Liam a PM or E-mail us.
Mark, courtmac1@verizon.net
Liam, ginaliam@mac.com and we will be certian to add you to our list.
until then Keep-EM-Spinnin'

For clarification:

The section of the M$M that crosses Wendell SF is actually a Federal Trail (National Trail) and according to the federal website (which as all good citizens know supercedes all local and stae agencies) it is open to mountain bikes. All of it. However, not everyone involved will appreciate this little bit of constitutionalism.

Secondly, due to the challenging nature of that section of trail (and depending on which way you're heading-the aerobic challenge) it has never been in any danger of being over run by bikers (or hikers for that matter).

Anyway, keep riding it rigidhack--and look for the new trail!

Superbman,

Let the P'ham boys know when you are headed out there for a little blood, sweat and tears. We'd be glad to lend a hand!

Glad to hear all of this. I generally walk that last section before Davis Rd. anyway precisely because of the water issues there. I love that trail, even though it eats me every time I ride it (up or down).
