Winter in the northeast offers unique riding opportunities that you simply can't experience in the summer time. Last weekend's ride on the Brownfield Bog (western Maine) is one of them. No elevation gain, no technical features, but a beautiful place where the mosquitos would carry you away in June.
Some thin ice required testing.

We came upon a painted turtle frozen into the ice, but seemed like it may have been in hibernation. One of the guys wanted to take it home and try to revive it, because it wouldn't survive where it was. How do you get such a thing out of the ice without damaging it? Someone came up with an idea, which worked.

Nice pictures. (It's good to see some blue sky even if it is in someone elses pictures.)
How's the turtle doing? Did they carry it out in their backpack?

He/she was rinsed off with water and carried out in a Camelbak, but I haven't heard if it survived. My friend has no phone, computer or other 20th century innovations (other than a truck & a 5-spot), but he may stop in today.
This is the same place as this post two years ago:

*MY* camelbak, I might add... (YUCK) :P
Let me know how Norman is doing, will ya, radair? I suspect he wasn't alive, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed he's now eating iceberg and burger at Michael's place.
Priss- that's not camo, that's a NEMBA jersey, vintage 2000 or so!

Maybe you should take him to a warmer climate. :(

I asked about "Norman", and Michael says "I think he might be dead, but he's not stinking yet, so he's still in a box in a cool corner of my apartment". I think he's hoping he'll come back from the dead, or undead.

Hahaha, you never came to mind, Norm. But you should direct that question to Z, because she came up with it.

Hey rad thats a good idea taking bikes on the bog.I belong to a hunt club adn we take care of all of the duck boxes every year. Gps new ones and clean up, and repair old ones and put new ones in. You are right in June as the blackfls and mosquitos there have big smiles when they see all of the bird watchers there. Any ways good pics and good to see the bog be used for riding .
