We got out Friday for a couple hours and we had just started and noticed something hanging in the woods up on a cliff..It turned out to be someones tent covered with tarps..laundry hanging out to dry...we just started back on the trail when we noticed the man walking towards us back towards his camp..? He did not say anything just kept walking past us...My friend stopped to get something out of his tool pack and I was looking around to see where this man was he was about three hundred feet from us pointing his finger at us pretending to shoot ...You never know what some people have gone through...

Since I know you're local to me, I gotta ask where you were. The gun thing sounds deliberately threatening. We may want to avoid that place for a while.

Well this is why I nicknamed myself girly girl....After reading this, I am not going out by myself....please let me know where this is!!

Last year I was "greeted" on a trail by a man with a "big gun" (real gun) turned out he was security but I freaked out....I really do not want to have another encounter....

I heard about some men living in Wompatuck in Hingham....I guess you can never be too careful....

Sounds pretty sketchy to me, I've run across some pretty strange folk, but none so overtly hostile. Contact the local P.D.?

You people from are out of control.
You go & intrude on some guys camp in the woods & then cry wolf when he points a finger at you? I hate to break it to you but the guy in the woods did no wrong. Not everyone you meet is going to welcome you with open arms. I personally know of a few people that escape to the wilderness many times of the year just to get away from the population. They live off the land and the last thing they need is some punks ransacking their camp. A lot of times these guys are homeless vets & want nothing to do with people. Learn to carry a weapon yourselves if you feel so imtimidated & undergunned by the mere jesture of someone pointing a loaded finger at you, and try not to be so thin skinned -your a MTN Biker right???

I have come across a couple of homeless encampments (which is what this sounds like) in my pedaling - I pay them as much respect as anyone else's dwelling.

I don't regard the occupants as more or less dangerous than anyone else I encounter in the woods, which is to say not much of a threat, certainly less than I encounter riding pavement on a bike.

Sorry, I didn't find where they said they intruded on this guy's camp. But, giving you the benefit of the doubt, I guess we should ask the OP if the land he was on was private or public. If it was public land, then the person camping may or may not have been there legally, but regardless, just him being there wouldn't raise my awareness level any. However, you better believe that if I'm on public land, and somebody makes a gesture like that at me, that I'm going at least to Condition Yellow, as at that point this person is making an implied threat for my use of that same public land. Sure, he's pointing a mere "loaded finger" at me, but that doesn't do much for the comfort level when you're probably alone in this person's presence probably far from a road and other people, and you have no idea what he has on him or in his encampment. I'd nod to him in a friendly manner anyways and pedal off away from him as fast as I could, but I'd also look back a few times while I re-assured myself with the presence of my P99 .40 (concealed, of course). ;)

chances are he is (squatting) on public/private property, that likly is not his own..and let's not forget the point that if he wants privacy maybe he should not set up camp on or near a obviously public trail, or on any trail for that matter.
what it comes down to wether you agree with it or not is the guy just should not be there.

Got-cha! It's only a penis substitute if *I* carry a gun. For you, it's something else.

Still hilarious how you snipped my entire comment about retreating from that situation. I could see how that could be construed as a macho use of firearms.

Ok..... ::)

look closer Mr. Concealed weapon.

all those guns are BB guns.

I use them to plunk beer cans when I am bored
with riding... and killing the odd red squirrel which
is known to chomp sleeping bags.

Excellent! I got you to abandon your ridiculous argument, back peddle, and resort to an ad hominem attack, all in one post. Or, for you, poast!! Nice little dance. But, tell you what, I'll let you have the last word and take the hit on my penis size, K?

All right gun boys, I think you should take it to off-the-bike and get this discussion back to Martians living in the woods that can shoot lasers out of there finger tips!
