View Full Version : Chocolate foot?

So I was reading some tutorials on getting up over logs. I'm good slow (grinding on the big ring) or fast (bunny hopping) but mid speeds I stink. One of the articles I read said to have your right foot forward as you approach. I thought it was strange they specified a foot since my belief is that, like a hand preference, everyone has a different "foot" preference.

I ride skateboards goofy foot, and my left is my chocolate foot.

So which is your chocolate foot? Its the one you put forward when you are about to hit a stunt or try and go up over something.

I'm a regular foot (left foot forward). I do try to ride switchfoot to be better at it. There's one particular egg rock I always seem to ride switch, but not on purpose.

If you're a goofy foot, your right foot is forward. Or you ride bikes opposite of the way you ride skateboards.

I'm goofy foot, which is strange, since I'm right handed.

But what's even weirder is that almost everyone else in the poll rides with the right foot forward, too. I always assumed I rode that way because I was goofy foot.

Does everyone out there ride the opposite from the way they board? Or are all of you that have voted "right" also goofy foot on snowboards and surfboards? (which would be unusual)

Weird. I could be wrong about me being goofy foot on a board - I love to skateboard , but I rarely do it with anyone else so I'm not hip to the lingo. When I was a kid, everyone used to tell me I rode goofy foot. On my skate board I have my left foot forward, like I said above, my left foot is my chocolate foot when riding. It seems I'm abnormal being the only one with my left forward - so far.

right foot forward on my bike and i ride regular when i surf, snowboard, or skate. so its kind of the opposite. but when you are snowboarding you typically want your dominant foot in the back because thats where a great deal of your control comes from.

I have been snowboarding for a long time, rode skateboards in my youth, surfboards in my early 20's, and having your right foot forward has always been termed "goofy".
It wasn't until recently, I read somewhere on one of the mtb forums, someone refer to the idea of having your snowboarding front foot, also be the foot forward when trying technical manuveurs, etc. on the bike.
It was like a light went off in my head, and helps when riding bikes I think. Particularly technical downhill sections.

I am a right-handed goofy-foot (skate, surf and snow). My lead foot when biking is my right. Never gave it much thought, but it seams kinda natural for my right side to always lead.

So are you more logical or artistic when attempting to solve a technical section of trail?

Just to throw a curve, I can't honestly say that I favor either foot -- sometimes it's right foot forward, sometimes it's left. But I'm pretty strange -- I'm right-handed but I bat lefty. Couldn't bat right to save my life. I also switch my fork hand quite a bit. This has got me thinking though. I'm presently working on breaking out of intermediate level telemark skiing. One of the exercises I do to work on technique is called a monomark -- you hold a tele stance all the way down the run and turn both directions like that. The idea is you can't do it unless your rear foot is weighed correctly. I was noticing Friday while practicing them that I could do it easier with my left foot forward than with my right foot, which I imagine would be goofy.

Ok, so it sounds like I'm not goofy foot. Oops. I think I remember what I do "wrong" I push with my left foot - that's not normal, right?

Ooh, I have no idea what that is called, but I have seen a few people skate that way (push with the foot that is forward).
It doesn't matter how you do it John, as long as you are having fun.

I force myself to give both feet the lead in turn. I never liked feeling like i had to get one foot in front or the other to perform a skill and i think to slow to remember which one it is anyway.

My best advice, Nothing touches the trail but the tires. That goes for any obsticles as well.
Mid speed big logs require 2 pedal strokes and if you have a strong foot it should be used for the second stroke. 1st pedal lift the front wheel from a standing position and second stroke hops the bike.

I'm righty, goofy, and tips like the above are why I come to sites like this.

I tend to aproach obstacles with my right foot forward, although I can do just as well with my left foot forward. I guess that's the martial arts training on not being one sided.

Left handed.
Snowboard regular (left foot leads).
Left foot foward on the bike feels best.

Still trying to figure out justbill's advice for getting over those logs.... priceless.

Left foot forward for me.... I am left handed though....so for me that would not be goofy ...as far as big logs I am still working on that ....it seems a lot easier on my dirtbike..

Just for reference, there is a whole thread over at empty beer regarding this topic:

http://forums.mtbr.com/showthread.php?t=151391&highlight=clear

There are some links to some good videos and "how-to" sites.

I tried some of it out this morning and hey I cleaned a trouble log behind my house for the first time without touching the big ring. Timing is key. You have to pull the rear up just after bumping the front tire.

I ride goofy on a snowboard/surfboard (right foot forward)
Right foot usually is forward when heading for an obstacle, but I can do both.

I think I now know the techique I will be working on - wrong foot (vanilla foot?) forward.

What the #$%^ is the significants of calling your lead foot "chocalate foot". I have been skateboarding/snowboarding for about 15 years and never heard this terminology. Is this some new generation lingo or what? Help me here! Anyway I am regular foot snow/skate and right handed. The strang thing about me is that I push off as though I ride goofy but then set up to ride for regular foot. My friends called it wild foot but for the new schoolers I guess this would be called some sort of flavor. Anyway, For mtb I usually lead with my right when I am riding technicaly stuff.

I've never understood the need for snowboarding to have its own terminology. Baseball has been using "Bats lefty/throws righty" for decades and it seems to work pretty well and keeps confusion to a minimum.

Also, what are you snowboarders hiding in those big backpacks? I've never actually seen anyone take anything out of or put anything into one.

I'm pretty sure it's a Hans Rey term. That's where I first read it anyway.

Goofy/regular foot is a surfing term from way, way back.
