Yes, I am complaining about the cold. I try not to complain about the summer heat.
I just can't bring myself to bike in this cold. I had no problem biking in it last year. I think it's because it got too cold too fast.
I guess I'll just have to pull up my skirt and get out there...

Isn't this the time of year where you start talking about moving to the Carolinas?

I've been OK with temps down to 5 or so, but this Raynauds is going to have a say about that, I'm afraid. New neoprene gloves from Performance, with polypro liners, plus a fleece overglove and chem heaters might do the trick. I'll find out Saturday AM.
Otherwise, I'll have to hit the spin bike. Now, I am too cheap to heat my barn in the winter, so it is damn close to riding outside, just without the wind.

Since the moon was out bright last night, a few of us went for a good long XC ski... well it was long anyway.
Moments after we stopped, my hair froze solid. Needlesstosay, we didn't hang around much in the parking lot. Came home, wrapped myself in blankets and was still cold to the core. :P
Anyone else out last night?

Slider - what direction does 'your' large barn door face? Mine faces south and is 10 x 12. The barn is 16 x 35. I fashioned a 'plastic' storm window to fit across the doorway. Open up the doors, light the smallstove for an hour or so, the temperature will quickly hit 75 to 80 degrees by 10am. No need for themal tights or multi layer gloves. Heat lasts until about 7 - 7:30pm. Plastic allows you to daydream about riding outdoors at 10 degrees above. Watching all those people walking by bundled up like it's so cold out.
Only problem is when you go outside to close the doors and head in, wearing only shorts, s/s jersey and clip in shoes.
Brrrr.......

Did a night ride last night w/ a few others. Hands and feet were cold but once you started to move they warmed up. Tried to were rbiking gloves w/ fleece underneath. Shortly swapt them out and threw on my snowboarding gloves which did the trick. No other problems except my water line froze up fast. Placed it against the small of my back and it heated up again real quick.

I went snowshoeing this AM at 7:15. It was cold but once I got going it was fine. At this point it's going to take a bunch of rain/warm temps to allow for any riding nearby. Who knows maybe that'll happen on Friday. Either way I'm not too worried. Snowshoeing allows me to see places I wouldn't see otherwise in my local riding areas. That and it provides a really good workout and nice change of pace from riding.

I had avalanche beacon training last night with my local Mtn Rescue Service group. My feet were frozen like blocks within a half hour.
But the Guinness afterward warmed me right up.
edit: TrailBait, I remember you moaning all winter last year. I think you used up your quota for the decade.

I got a EMS or REI catalogue a while back that featured all sorts of avalanche gear: beacons, carbon pole prods, snowshovels, oxygen masks that let you breathe under the snow, etc. Sort of made me go "Hmmmmm... WTF!"
I guess I'm a real pud, but I don't think I'd be real into anything that gonna get me caught deep under the snow.
What's the allure, Radair? I think I'm missing something here.

It got way to cold way too fast. Below 25 degrees, I just can't keep my hands warm. No riding but XC ski's are an option. I can handle that with mittens to about the mid teens on a sunny day. Then the indoor trainer doesn't look so bad.

I'm with PK, being covered with deep snow doesn't sound like much fun, Hummm.....Rescuer or Ruscuee, hard choice on this one.
Oh yeah, I was directing traffic last night....Lots O Fun on real cold nights. :P

I am a member of Mountain Rescue Service in North Conway. We do technical rescues (i.e. litter raisings and lowerings on the cliffs) and above-treeline searches in winter. I also like skiing off-piste powder.
The allure is maximizing your (and your friends') chances of survival should the sh!t hit the fan, so to speak. One member of MRS was killed in an avalanche in 1982. None of us want that to happen to us or our partners.

Nah, I think it was the snow that I was complaining about.
The worst thing about the cold (other than my whining) is that it pretty much nixes my lunch rides. By the time I get all dressed up, I only have a few minutes to ride before I need to head back so I can re-dress in time to get back to work.

Slider - what direction does 'your' large barn door face?
My east-facing barn is reasonably well winterized, with some recycled french doors covering the space behind the still-hangind "real" barn door. It has storms, insulation, and its own oil tank and burner. But it's still pretty drafty, so I am reluctant to burn $2.50/gallon oil, expecially since I usually work up a good sweat in any weather in there.
The oil is reserved to encourage my wife to do the same. Without it, there's NFW she'll go near her elliptical trainer.

Slider,
I have Raynaud's syndrome, runs on the maternal side of the family. It only seems to affect me in 40 F./wet sort of conditions. Does yours hit you when it's colder?

Hey radair, thanks for what you do. I had some friends in the Acadia SAR group, they went up Champlain 10? years ago, in an ice storm, to pull off a couple campers. Crazy, and they do it. (No, it wasn't me, but I remember thinking "Are they NUTS?")
Seriously, thanks.
Cheers,

Mine is a direct result of nerve damage from three straight weekends of leaf blowing. It mostly affects only the index finger of my right hand but spreads to the middle finger after a while. Cold is all it takes to set it off.
I'll never touch an effing leaf blower again.

Agreed about the rescue program. What I'm missing is the allure of wandering and skiing in areas that are very prone to avalanches in the first place. I think I'd feel pretty wigged out just being there. It seems scary to me.

Avalanches are not that big of an issue here in the east. People still die in them every couple of years, but it's almost always due to ignoring posted warnings and not taking steps to minimize their risk. But given that rescue personnel sometimes get put in situations that we may not normally seek out, it's really good to know how to efficiently use the tools. The only way to do that is through practice.
On any given winter day, you & I probably put ourselves in much more danger riding on thin ice than I do in negotiating potential avalanche terrain.

It's funny you mention thin ice. PK is famous for riding paper thin ice on rivers, streams etc. Call me a chicken but I'd rather not take an icy plunge.

That resovoir in Concord still freaks me out a little, what with it being black ice and all. It was certainly thick enough though, just eerie (2 winters ago when it was insanely cold for weeks).

Those settling cracks are always reassuring. At least you can toss your bike if you need to. Skates aren't quite so easily shed.
But I'd guess anything except flowing water is OK by now. It was -3 in my town last night. Way too cold for me to even think about a ride.

We went out last night to try something we were thinking that maybe the local hiking trails would have enough foot traffic to make it ridable...?? We rode for awhile on that worked out better than I thought it might...than we came across the rail trails and followed a quad track for about 25 mins out ...The cold weather was the last thing on my mind....I think the track was about 6" across made it pretty tough riding coming back bacause of the slight uphill ...It was good to get out there ..We had to be carefull of going off the trail, your front tire would come to a complete stop in the snow...

I think when all this rain freezes back up (tonight) any trail that has been packed at all may be solid enough to ride. I'm going to give it a shot tomorrow.

If anyone is interested I'm heading to Burlingame (way southern RI - Google Charlestown, RI) early tomorrow AM. I hear it's pretty much bare. I was planning on swinging by Big River on my way home as well, although I suspect it might be a little tough going out there. If you're heading somewhere that's snowy/wet today bring studs. If anyone goes out in the woods (I just did in Franklin) they're tracks will freeze.
I was hoping it would rain all day and clear out some more snow so I could ride around here :(
