DOCTORS:
(A) The number of physicians in the U.S. is 700,000.
(B) Accidental deaths caused by Physicians per year is 120,000.
(C) Accidental deaths per physician are 0.171.
Statistics courtesy of U.S. Dept. of Health Human Services
GUNS:
(A) The number of gun owners in the US. is 80,000,000.
- Yes, that is 80 million!
(B) The number of accidental gun deaths per year, all age groups, is 1,500.
(C) The number of accidental deaths per gun owner is 0.000188.
Statistically, doctors are approximately 9,000 times
more dangerous than gun owners.
Please alert your friends to this alarming threat.
We must ban doctors before this gets completely out of hand.
Remember, "Guns don't kill people, doctors do."
Fact: NOT EVERYONE HAS A GUN, BUT ALMOST EVERYONE HAS AT LEAST ONE DOCTOR.

How many intentional gun-related deaths were there?
How many intentional doctor-related deaths?

The real question is what is the ratio of lives saved to lives accidentally ended by physicians, versus number of family / property saved/protected by guns versus people accidentally killed by guns.

No those are not the questions at all. If it was a matter of what saves lives vs. takes lives vs. endangers lives, then most things (alcohol, cars, tobacco, skydiving, mountain biking, swimming pools, movie stars, etc) should be illegal. All OTC drugs would be my perscription only and handed out like methadone at a clinic.
I subscribe to the belief that people are generally good and objects are neither good nor evil. So if people what to own stuff and do things, let them. When they harm someone else or are going to harm someone else, then do something about it regardless of whether it is with a Glock or Prius.

We were talking about GUNS vs DOCTORS and I never said anything about banning anything, so I'm not sure where you were going with this.

alcohol - there are laws controlling its sale and consumption
cars - there are laws controlling their purchase, registration and operation
tobacco - see alcohol, above
skydiving - laws control training, and when and where you can practice it
mountain biking - we struggle with trail closures every day
swimming pools - law requires fencing, and to obey the filling/emptying rules in your town
movie stars - they're all liberal whackos, so let's ignore them
So why should guns be any different than all those other things you cite?

Not me...I wanna become a lawyer. But I'd be a good lawyer... and only scr#w my clients one-at-a-time. I'd never use my powers for evil by running for office so I could scr#w all my constituents at once like so many other hacks at the public trough...

I don't think anyone is saying that guns should be less regulated than pools or mountainbiking.

I don't know. It's Monday morning. I overslept an hour and my brain is still groggy. But what the hell is the original poster's point, anyway? Or is there one?

I think this is what their saying
"I subscribe to the belief that people are generally good and objects are neither good nor evil. So if people what to own stuff and do things, let them. So if my doctor harms someone I love through misdiagnosis, should I shoot him with my M16 or run him down with my 6 mpg Hummer?

Regardless of which you choose, you need to take extra precaution making sure it is accidental.
I didn't have an original point when posting. Just thought it was an interesting set of stats. Thought it might spur some conversations where I could preach my gun toting philosophy. ;)

what is the definition of "accidental deaths" for doctors? Does it include any procedure with the risk of death, or does it only include things like "oops, I just slashed your aorta while trying to remove this mole"?

"Well officer, I was talking on my cellphone and trying to follow my GPS navigator on my way to an important church benefit for cancer children when suddenly this man who coindicentally performs abortions walked in front of my vehicle, and BOOM! And in a bizarre twist, my semiautomatic assault rifle, which I use for hunting rabbits, just suddenly went off, which would explain the bullet wound to his head.
Oops. "
