View Full Version : So what's the best NEMBA chapter region for riding?

In the spirit of friendly boasting and bar-stool pontificating, I put forth the question-which NEMBA chapter's got the best riding in their territory? Here's my boast for the most:
Though I've always liked the Berks, I'm going to say with the Holyoke range (bachelor St/ Earl's Trails to most of you), Wendell SF, DAR SF, HAWLEY SF as the big trails systems complimented by the numerous smaller-but great local rides (Greenfield Ridge, Deerfield Ridge-Sugarloafs, Dry Hill, Mt. Toby, Amethyst Brook, The Many Areas of the M & M and the Robert Frost, Catamount, Montague Plains to name just a few) that PVNEMBA, much like Stacy's mom, has it going on. Go Pioneer valley!

Wachusett NEMBA has some respectable numbers. 50+ miles possible in Groton (not personally checked out -- yet), 4+ hour rides possible in Leominster, and big rides available in Townsend, if you go outside Mass a bit into Brookline/Mason/New Ipswich NH.

It's really a loaded question at best and borderline silly. It's all a question of geography. Like they say in real estate, location, location, location.

I don't know, but the White Mtns suck. You wouldn't want to ride here.
Sounds like I need to ride in the PV, though.

You'd probably know if you didn't live in the White Mountains. (tee hee)

Wow, I live such a sheltered life. I knew we should have got electricity when we got indoor plumbing.
I think I'm in love with Stacy's Mom, too.
Thanks for the linkage Jason.

The best thing about New England is a tank of gas will get you to it all. If you drive an SUV you may only be able to get to half of it without endangering the kids college fund. ;D

Uh oh. The kids are supposed to have a college fund?
As far as the best place to live, I like the North Shore because it's not too far a drive to places like DogTown, Bear Brook, Mt. A, Pawtuckaway, Ft. Rock -- just to name a few. It's only a couple of hours to the White Mountains, even though Radair says it sucks there. In addition, we've got some of the best road biking between the coastal routes and the back roads of southern New Hampshire.

I'd have to say Seacoast has a very nice variety of riding, for one chapter. Heck, they do Ft. Rock, Bear Brook, Pawtuckaway...and I think they help out at FOMBA too. That's 4 pretty sweet spots....

Are there unloaded questions?-don't be such crab, we're just having fun.
Oh, and I'd say it's more than just geography-I've been to places with great topography--but no active community so the landscape remains woefully singletrack free (like much of the Adirondacks, unfortunately).

CT has something special. Climbs, but not the gut-busting variety, and loads of sweet, very technical, singletrack. Unlike eastern MA, it is, for the most part, under-used. And unlike all the resort spots in more northern locations, there's no vacation traffic to wade through on the drive.

ride in maine

Well my first choice is bradbury mtn up here in maine as it is growing by leaps and bounds.
Next would be the kingdom trails and then the new trail system over in barre vt.
After that its all good because a good day of riding is still better than any day of work

I don't get out much. But i have to say that the SeaCoast has an awesome line up with Bear Brook, Pawtuckaway, Fort Rock and even though FOMBA is not maintained by the SeaCoast Chapter many of the SeaCoast members are personally involved in FOMBA as well. The riding varity here keeps me pretty content. The occassional trip to the KT are good to keep the creative juice flowing. I'm off to Moab, in a few weeks. Maybe I can bring some off that experience back to the SeaCoast.

If I didn't grow up in the Pioneer Valley, I'd probably say PV-nemba, but since I've rode a lot of the trails hundreds of times, the Berkshires are more interesting to me. I'm still convinced they have a greater diversity of trails, however Mt. Toby is a wealth of potential that is yet to be fully tapped.

Fair enough, Kevin-just as long as we agree it's somewhere in western, ma ...we (as in you and me)need to get together and draw up a plan to develop Toby Further--if you've been to Wendell lately you'll get the gist of what our motivated Franklin county crew can get done in a relatively short amount of time.
Also-I'm planning on riding a longish loop up at Wendell this Sunday-if you're interested in coming out (I don't know if you ever made it back after January ;D) drop me a line, I'll do my best to 'guide' you around-though I suspect I'll be the one following.

Central / SE Mass. sucks too. We only have 'Nam, Whitehall, Upton, Douglas, Rayburn, Spider Gates, West Millbury, Plumber's, Hodges, Foxboro, Wrenthem, Borderland, Leominster, and assorted other small areas all within a 30 minute drive. And ALL of them are wide, flat, sandy, non-technical fireroads that no one would enjoy riding. ;)
Seriously, all of New England has great riding, and each area is a little different. Never take for granted the number of places you can ride, as it's a nice option to have.
