So where's the best place in Southern NE for a fall foilage ride? I did October mountain last year. Great foilage, bad trails.

I hear tell Leominster is a good fall ride?

There's some decent trails at October Mtn, they just can be a little tough to find. If you ever go back try starting from Kirnan Park off of Williams Street.

For a foliage ride in the same area, go a little further and ride the Yokun Ridge. Park at the Arcadian shop or at Olivia's.

I second the Yokun ridge in Lenox--some of the best riding in the region and unqquestionably the prettiest--good trail guide can be found on the www.mtbr.com trail review section for Yokun Ridge in Lenox, MA

Truthfully, in about three weeks ANYWHERE in the Pioneer and Berkshire Valleys will be ablaze with autumnal colors.

Bigelow Hollow in Union CT, has perhaps some of the best fall foliage riding I've done. Once we get to peak, perhaps I'll lead a ride there.

Meet me just before dawn, at Tri River Medical in Uxbridge. We'll come around the corner about a half mile in, over looking the wide marsh formed by the Blackstone and realize, holy ****, it doesn't get much better than this. Brilliant golds, yellows, oranges and fire reds bathing in buttery sun with a touch of mist and crisp air. Oh, and on the ride home, you can stop at Mom's and get a massive plate o bisciuts and gravy!

Yeah the climbs aren't epic, or the drops crazy, or even crazy technical... but boy is it great :D

Cheers,

-Andrew

In Eastern Ma, I think the swampy areas are the best - Wampatuck, Freetown, etc.

I'm thinking south of Boston will have dismal colors this year what with the lack of rain this summer. Some areas are already going straight to brown. :'(

Yeah, this is going to be a crap year for foilage - the black and white birch behind my house are already changed and dropping leaves. Two weeks ago at Middlesex looked and smelled an awful lot like an early fall ride.

Maybe not so much Leo SF itself, but the Midstate trail spends some time up high enough to get decent views, specially if you push north of Mt Watatic and up towards Temple. Some tough riding up that way tho.

Acadia is indeed very special, but the carriage roads are just wide, hard pack gravel and dirt and are extremely boring. I spent most every summer of my childhood up there.

The MTB is an afterthought really. Go up there and hike, road bike (epic views along the Loop Road), or do the 'cross thing... as a MTB destination it wouldn't be my first pick - and I'm getting married there!

Cheers,

Yeah, I've been up to Bar Harbor. That place is awesome. But I too did not enjoy the carriage trails much, and most of the equestrians I came across were stuck up @$$holes. And this was on the carriage trails open to mountain bikers.

Sad, isn't it? There are some great, hidden trails in the park that would be PRIMO mtb rides, one in particular is the long loop down Beech Mountain, I dream about dropping that sometimes.

I too have encountered the equestrian a-holes, but I also got flipped off by a guy doing 25 down the loop road (speed limit - 35 - I went by him about about 36 on a downhill section after being sick of his exhaust).

National parks showcase the best of America, but showcase the worst of Americans.

Cheers,
