Mountain Bike Festival on Cape Cod to Donate Proceeds to Victims of Hurricane Katrina

The New England Mountain Bike Association's Harpoon-Topeak Mountain Bike Adventure Finale to Benefit the American Red Cross

September 6, 2005 – Acton, MA – The New England Mountain Bike Association announced today that all the proceeds from its annual mountain bike festival in Sandwich, Massachusetts on September 18th will be donated to the American Red Cross to benefit the victims of Hurricane Katrina. The festival is the culmination of the season-long Harpoon-Topeak MTB Adventure ride series, featuring one-day mountain bike charity rides on marked loops around New England that enable cyclists to support various causes.

"Our hearts go out to all the victims and the families devastated by Katrina," says NEMBA's executive director, Philip Keyes. "It behooves all of us to do what we can to help, and since 2500 of the victims will be staying at nearby Camp Edwards at Otis Air Force Base, it's especially important to take action now. We hope mountain bikers from around New England will come show their solidarity to support those affected by this catastrophic storm."

The festival will feature mountain bike rides for all ages and abilities, a bicycle vendor area and bicycle swap, swimming, and food. NEMBA encourages attendees to collect as many donations from friends, family, and colleagues as possible; pledge forms are available online. There is a minimum $15 registration fee, with additional donations encouraged. The event begins at 9am at Camp Lyndon YMCA, 117 Stowe St., Sandwich MA.

For more information and directions, or to download a pledge form, visit www.nemba.org or call 800-57-NEMBA.

This is an awesome way for mountain bikers to pitch in to help some people very seriously in need... I am looking forward to doing something concrete to help!

But even if you just come to the event, you will be giving to a good cause and showing your support. Every bit helps!

Latest from National Hurricane Center- Wed, 9/14

..THOSE WITH ACTIVITIES PLANNED FOR SOUTHEASTERN NEW ENGLAND AND THE WATERS TO THE EAST AND SOUTH OF CAPE COD SHOULD CLOSELY MONITOR LATER ADVISORIES ON HURRICANE OPHELIA AS ISSUED BY THE TROPICAL PREDICTION CENTER...

HURRICANE OPHELIA IS EXPECTED TO MENACE THE NORTH CAROLINA COAST THROUGH MOST OF THURSDAY THEN TURN TOWARD THE WATERS SOUTH AND EAST OF NEW ENGLAND FRIDAY INTO SATURDAY...PASSING AROUND 160 MILES SOUTH SOUTHEAST OF NANTUCKET SATURDAY MORNING. HOWEVER...A TRACK CLOSER TO THE COAST IS STILL POSSIBLE.

IF OPHELIA SLOWS DOWN ITS DEPARTURE FROM THE NORTH CAROLINA COAST THURSDAY NIGHT...AN ADJUSTING JET STREAM MAY TRY TO RECURVE HER CLOSER TO CAPE COD BY THIS WEEKEND. THIS SCENARIO WOULD BRING TROPICAL STORM CONDITIONS TO THE OUTER CAPE AND ISLANDS EARLY SATURDAY.

It would be ironic and unfortunate it Nembafest was rained out by a hurricane or remnants thereof...

Is there a rain date?

Edit: Doh...I thought Nembafest was Saturday for some reason?! So Ophelia should not be a problem. However this changes all my weekend plans.

I've never done a disease ride or any benefit event where I've had to ask co-workers and friends for money. I HATE asking people for money!

But this time I thought, "I really need to do something to help!" so printed out the form and sheepishly approached my first "victim."

Within 2 minutes (asking 2 people) I raised $50. And they did it all smiles. I'm figuring if I ask a dozen more people tomorrow morning, I'll be able to raise a couple hundred dollars! People seem to be happily willing to donate to the cause -- if you just ask them.

Anyone else out there getting sponsors for the ride Sunday???

I'm the same way, plus I felt a bit awkward asking non-riders to donate to previous trail specific NEMBA Fundraisers. This however is a no-brainer...

I sent an email around at my office and talked to a few colleagues. I got 2 generous pledges right away with zero coercion :-))

I'll hit up the family & neighbors tomorrow ;-)
