View Full Version : FEMA Katrina Failure

It is pathetic that the authorities have let it get this bad. And then Michael Brown, head of FEMA has the NERVE to say this:
http://www.cnn.com/2005/WEATHER/09/01/katrina.impact/index.html
"I think the death toll may go into the thousands and, unfortunately, that's going to be attributable a lot to people who did not heed the advance warnings," he told CNN

There wasn't *that* much advance warning and people who couldn't get out of the city were told to go to the super dome. Now many of them are dead. This is a really insensitive comment in my opinion.

And what the hell is going on down there with the evacuation? If I was in charge all 100,000 of the people waiting to be evacuated from the Superdome area would have been out of there by yesterday.

How can this be taking so long? The government is really taking their sweet time acting on this. Its not that hard to get a couple hundred army personel carriers, or even farm tractors with trailers down to the super dome. Have them making non-stop trips from the dome to a few miles away where there's dry land and buses/shelter! Concentrate the national guard around the superdome and tell people to be calm, you'll all be out of the area within 24 hours.

Bush claimed the other day (while at an interview, instead of , oh, I don't know, HELPING OUT) that "nobody could have predicted the levee failure."

Most people have know about this problem for a looooooooooooooong time. Even Mr Bill knew

There's plenty of blame to go around, not just Bush.

"Both the Bush and Clinton administrations proposed budgets that low-balled the needs. Local politicians grabbed whatever money they could and declared victory. And the public didn't exactly demand tax increases to pay for flood-control and hurricane-protection projects.

Just last year, the Army Corps of Engineers sought $105 million for hurricane and flood programs in New Orleans. The White House slashed the request to about $40 million. Congress finally approved $42.2 million, less than half of the agency's request.

Yet the lawmakers and Bush agreed to a $286.4 billion pork-laden highway bill that included more than 6,000 pet projects for lawmakers. Congress spent money on dust control for Arkansas roads, a warehouse on the Erie Canal and a $231 million bridge to a small, uninhabited Alaskan island.

How could Washington spend $231 million on a bridge to nowhere - and not find $42 million for hurricane and flood projects in New Orleans? It's a matter of power and politics."

Maybe all the union hacks who built the leaky big dig tunnels can find new work building leaky levees(sic).

"...the Bush ... administration proposed budgets that low-balled the needs. Local politicians grabbed whatever money they could and declared victory. And the public didn't exactly demand tax increases to pay for flood-control and hurricane-protection projects.

Just last year, the Army Corps of Engineers sought $105 million for hurricane and flood programs in New Orleans. The [Bush] White House slashed the request to about $40 million. [Heartless Republicans in] Congress finally approved $42.2 million, less than half of the agency's request.

Yet ... Bush agreed to a $286.4 billion pork-laden highway bill that included more than 6,000 pet projects for lawmakers. [Republicans in] Congress spent money on dust control for Arkansas roads, a warehouse on the Erie Canal and a $231 million bridge to a small, uninhabited Alaskan island [for oil drilling through baby seal skulls].

How could Washington [aka Bush] spend $231 million on a bridge to nowhere [just to kill baby seals]- and not find $42 million for hurricane and flood projects in New Orleans? It's a matter of power and politics [and Bush hating everyone except the rich]."

Looking at your quote above, itsn't it obvious?

Also, don't forget these meaningful and highly pertinent articles...

See. I can distort and put in links to meaningless drivel as well.

So that proves it. Global warming is a sham created by the Illuminati to control global gold reserves in the hope to reveal the true nature of Nessie. End of story.

Only an idiot and fool could argue with that.

Wow, that was easy. Perhaps I should go to over the dark side. It is way easier to just plug my ears and keep screaming.

I love the Weekly World News. More credible than any prolific Nemba forums poster.

Yup. Seems those environmental wacko can't escape critism either.

"But it is just one illustration of a destructive river-management philosophy that took hold in the ‘90s, influenced the Clinton administration, and had serious policy consequences. Put simply, it’s impossible to understand the delays in building levees without being aware of the opposition of the environmental groups to dams, levees, and anything that interfered with the “natural” river flow. The group American Rivers, which leads coalitions of eco-groups on river policy, has for years actually called its campaign, “Rivers Unplugged.”

Over the past few years, levees came to occupy the same status for environmental groups as roads in forests — an artificial barrier to nature. They frequently campaigned against levees being built and shored up on the nation’s rivers, including on the Mississippi."

Delay? Clinton started the project. Bush cut it by 80%

Yes, once again my facts are wrong. Which is why we found WMD's in Iraq, Osama has been captured, nobody is detained in Gitmo, there is no deficit, nobody knew the levees would break.... ::)

They actually fired the FEMA Horse Director!!

Bush actually did something right for a change, even if just too deflect some pressure.

sure, but what you don't show is George and Daddy grilling up that fish with butter and garlic to feed to the poor evacuees. Just another example of the left only telling half the story.

Breaking news on Boston.com... Brown has resigned.

Is this the first time someone has been held accountable in the Bush administration? If only Rove or Rumsfield would "resign".

Congressional review on Katrina. Page 11 has the "conclusion."

http://www.house.gov/judiciary_democrats/crskatrinarept91205.pdf

Apparently the Governor of Louisiana and Bush both did the right thing. Brown did nothing because the Department of Homeland Security (Chertoff) never told him to or gave him authority.

Basically the DHS and Chertoff are to blame.

So, people have been stuck in their cars for over 12 hours trying to evacuate. Cars are running out of gas, gas stations are running out of gas. people are pushing their cars in the traffic to save gas.

When can we (meaning me) start blaming Bush? ;D

I'm gonna lean to the right here for a moment.

As far as I am concerned, FEMA is mainly responsible for getting people out, helping them while severe conditions rage, and that's about it.

It should not be FEMA's job to rebuild everybody's house.

BUT, Insurance companies should be made more responsible, and be given a LOT less wiggle room to get out of paying customers. Instead of FEMA paying for this, maybe the government should just pay for insurance people to represent customers. What are those people called...?? You know, they're agents working FOR people to help get them the money they deserve....no, not lawyers....
