View Full Version : Getting a steel frame painted?

Has anyone here had a steel frame repainted? I am looking for something pretty cheap, and local (Falmouth, on Cape Cod). I might have a buddy who also wants his steel frame painted, so if it's the same color, maybe it's cheaper.
I know of plenty of places to do it for a ton of money, but are there any auto body places that people here have taken a bike into and had it come out OK? If so, what did you pay?
I can strip the parts off myself, then probably take it to the bike shop to have the headtube and BB shell faced/chased.
I don't have the time to do this myself, or I would just do it. THe paint is not terrible, but I think some fresh paint might make me fall back in love with the old bike. Like a boobjob.

have it faced and chased after the paint though, no need for it before

Have you considered powdercoat? There are a gazillion places that could do that for I'm guessing under $100.

One of my accounts is a powdercoating company, and I asked about powdercoating a frame, and the guy told me it would cost around $60, due to all the taping of holes that they would have to do. That was a couple of years ago. The price may have gone up.

There's a guy in So. NH who paints for Ted Wojcik. I think he's @ 200.00, hundreds of colors to choose, and one of the best, real paint jobs, and he knows bikes. You could have it powdercoated somewhere else but won't be as durable.... Maybe you could work out a deal if you can get some more friends in on it and don't mind matching bikes..... If you want I'll find his #.

His name is John and his company is Underground Cycle, and , like CP says, is pretty much right across the street from Ted, in Hampstead. His card reads 'painting for the discriminating rider' , and his work shows it. He's also into motorcycles but will paint ANYTHING!! Now you got me thinking, maybe I should give my Ted a boobjob too......hmmmmmmm....
His # is 603-329-6161

that's the kind of thing I am looking for, but something local so I dont have to pay the shipping.
If anyone knows something on the upper cape/wareham area, let me know.

that's funny, i just googled them and gave them a call.
he said there is a small discount for 2 frames the same color. so my buddy and i might do matching bikes (but we're not gay, not that there is anything wrong with that).
thanks all. if i do it, i will post something.

My husband and I do powdercoating and we have done many bike frames in all colors including translucents. The cost is usually determined by the amount of prep work that has to be done before painting. If you can strip off all or most of the paint it takes me less time to sandblast it. Masking off holes is no big deal. We could do your frame for $65.00. He works in Middleboro,Ma. maybeyou could arrange to meet with him unless you wanted to drop it off to us in Attleboro. Thanks
