yearly budget

I am curious what people are spending each year on bikes. That includes new bikes, parts, accessories, clothing, etc. But not travel expenses, assuming you go places to ride.

So how about it? Maybe broken down by LBS vs. online?

Mine is easy. Since my initial investment in the bike back in 2002...
2003 - 0$
2004 - 0$
2005 - $350 ($225 LBS, $125 online)

Needless to say, I didn't ride too much in 03 and 04. Stupid trips to Japan for work!

I don't keep track - mostly because I probably don't want to know how much I spend.

I maintain a fleet of 5 or 6 bikes for the family so some my expenditures are not for my bike, though probably 80% or better are for my bike.

For my bike, each year I probably buy 3-4 sets of tires, 2-3 sets of brake pads, and once every 18 months or so a new drivetrain. That works out to probably $300 per year or something? This year I also put on new chainstays ($200 and a better rear shock (RP3) $255). I can see a new set of wheels or rims in my near future as well.

I just built up a bike for my daughter which cost about $400 - does that count? Also this winter I wrecked my son's trigger shifters so I put new ones on - $50 or so.

On upgrades, replacement parts etc, I've spent probably in the $300 range. And probably $100 on gas traveling to and fro various places, but that's a different topic ("yikes").

Oh man, that's where things start getting really ugly!

Since I got into DH about 5 years ago, I've easily put 13k into bikes and gear (and that's just the DH stuff, the majority of which I got used or deeply discounted). Figure probably another 5k at least into trail and play bikes...I can't imagine what the figures would be if I paid a shop to do work on them. :o

I broke my frame in the late fall last year, so I rode my son's Jekyll over the winter. During a very cold/wet ride I managed to pretty much coat the bike in ice. While trying to force a shift with iced up parts. I broke both of the shifters.

This has been a slighty more expensive season.....
Bought aused bike for my wife rebuilt here drive train new breaks. Rebuilt my drive train...new rear shock new helmet light HID. New batteries for my light. Used road bike (cheap) upgrades to said road bike. new rubber.

I was thinking to switching to crack. Cheaper easire and less painful to use! I can use it whenever I want!

My budget discussion:

First, I got into beer brewing. This cost me about $750 and I still have all the gear, although I have not made a batch in about 3 years. However, the kettles are great for doing lobsters, steamers, mussles and fried things.

Then, I got into aviation. Fixed wing at first, have about $10k into that. After I was done with fixed wing, I got into helicopters. $225 an hour. Any more discussion is painful.

Then came motorcycles. I nearly bought one last year, but my fiancee got sick and it was either a new mtb or a the motorcycle. The Flo Red Epic came home with me.

I don't care how much I spend, because it's not NEARLY what I was blowing on the other stuff!

Although, I'd really like to get a Specialized Allez Elite Triple... and I'd love to build up a Ellsworth Moment or a IF singlespeed............ ;D

To my wife I would say $300
In actuality easily $1000 in a good year, $1500 in a crash filled year. That is wheels, tires, tubes, cracked frames, bent triangles, new rings and cassettes, forks etc. To me, a small price to pay for 100+ fun days a year

this year i'm over the $5k mark. new bike, couple forks, couple sets of wheels, pedals, tires, blah, blah, blah. difference is i moved to NC, so unlike the rest of you suckers, i'll be riding year-round. looks like I should up my limit on my bike credit card since I don't think it will be getting a few month break.

I ride year round too. The only thing that stops me from riding is when the snow is up to my hubs.

yeah, that's what I did this year at attitash Gnu got most of his days there. A whole week takes a tole on your body, but it's worth it. So far I've got 11 days.

haha..........any time you or anyone for that matter want's to get away from the great white north in the winter, i got extra bedrooms.
