View Full Version : crank adjustable?

I replaced all my cables today, and while tuning, I noticed a poping when I put heavy pressure on the left pedal. It seems to be the chain just barely catching on the large ring up front. It only happens on the middle ring with the back on the smallest cog, so maybe the chain is being torqued slightly...

I think the front ring set needs to move out a bit, but I don't see any adjustments for that.

Crank adjustment? bottom bracket? Suggestions?

If all you did was replace the cables, and you didn't have this problem before, than I would rule out the crank and BB. There is no adjustment I know of to move the crank unless you started adding washers etc. I think you may need to adjust the front derailleur to get a better swing out of it. Also it wouldn't hurt to check the BB for loosness etc.

If you are running a square taper bb, and you've repeatedly tightened your drive side crank, it moves inboard cumulatively, and might eventually get too far inboard for a good chain line. Unless you run an adjustable bottom bracket, like the Race Face, you can't move it back out. You could space the ring out with some washers, but if it has moved that far, the crank will eventually reach the limit of the spindle taper and you won't be able to tighten it any more.

Before you toss in the towel, try backpedalling the crank a few times to see if there's a stiff link in the chain. If one link doesn't pivot as freely as the rest, it will hold the bent position until the derailler pulley forces it straight. Work it side to side a bit, and lube, to loosen it. This isn't too likely, but it is easy enough to check.

Best luck!
