I ride a SC Superlight. It does not have a replaceable hanger. I saw somewhere that I could use a break away bolt for the rear derailleur.
Anyone got any experience with that? Where would I find a break away bolt?

Most well stocked LBS's should carry a selection of breakaway bolts.

Hmmm... tried Naults in Nashua. The guy looked at me funny. Seems EVERYTHING comes with replacable hangers now adays. Alas no break away bolt.
I did get a nifty parking ticket though. Stupid cops patrolling like hawks. I was in there maybe 5 minutes! But, I did break the law. Oh well.

There may be aluminum ones available also.

They are a bit tricky to install. I use them on my older heckler and bullit - I would see check with Cycleloft in Burlington and have them install the new bolt. The bolts break away after much less of an impact than I thought they would so I carry and extra one with me for trail side repair.
If you do ever trash your rear dropout they do make a threaded adapter that pushes in from the inside of the rear triangle and the deraulier screws into that. However, with that fix you can't use your smallest ring on the rear cassette.

Also, remember to bring an extra C-clip, as they typically fly off when the bolt breaks.

I doubt you will bend the dropout on a Superlight, I have bent an XT mech into a crumpled lump without damage to the frame at all. Breakaways are just another headache.

I have been riding it 4 years without incident yet, but a bent hanger is what prompted me to buy the superlight in the first place.

I had that same concern with my Heckler ('96). I have dropped it on the derailleur more times than I can remember. Yes, I have bent it a little bit but not enough that I couldn't sraighten it with a Park drop out tool. Most shops charge like $10 to line it back up so after the first time I needed it I bought the $50 tool. I havne't worried since then.

Be forewarned, frequently when a breakaway bolt shears the nib on the derailleur that the A? adjustment bolt bears on gets sheared off too. Saved the frame but killed the derailleur. And breakaway bolts break more often than hangers bend. Like many things, there's no perfect solution.
